The Inside Out 2 Box Office Is Outstanding.
Almost any metric indicates that the Inside Out 2 box office is already a success. Apart from already almost reversing its $200 million budget in one significant area over a single weekend, it seems to be securing a place in the Top 5 Pixar films of all time by the end of its run. Given its performance relative to the original film, which ranks sixth on the company's ranking right now, it seems bound for good things. See here how the new film stands relative to the original:
Title; Budget; Opening Weekend; Box Office Worldwide
------- | -------- | --------| --------
Inside Out 2015 | $175 million | $90.4 million | $857.6 million
$200 million | $140-$150 million | TBD Inside Out 2 (2024)
Inside Out 2 is positioned to feature one of Pixar's biggest Box Office Opening Weekends Ever.
The sequel tracks the ongoing trip of the emotions inside 13-year-old Riley Anderson (Kensington Tallman), who must make way for new, more complicated emotions including Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser). With a worldwide box office tally of $857.6 million, the Inside Out 2 release comes almost exactly nine full years after the first 2015 Pixar Success.
As of Saturday morning, Deadline projects Inside up 2 closing up its Opening Weekend with a 3-day total between $140 and $150 million at the domestic box office. This is by far the largest opening weekend of 2024, much ahead of the previous No. 1 opening, Dune: Part Two at $82.5 million, even at the lower bound of that range. Falling short only of Incredibles 2's $182.7 million, it might also become the second highest-grossing opening weekend ever for a Pixar film.
A Significant Turnaround for Pixar
Apart from outperforming the original film and Pixar's whole chart, Inside Out 2 marks a significant corporate turn-around. Though their 2023 title Elemental proved to be a sleeper smash, Pixar has been in a box office slump since the release of Toy Story 4 in 2019. With just $118.3 million in North America, the opening weekend of this new sequel has already outgrossed the whole domestic run of their 2022 flop Lightyear.
Given that Inside Out 2 reviews have achieved a Certified Fresh 92% Rotten Tomatoes score, the film's worldwide total might ultimately surpass $1 billion if it can maintain its box office lead. Behind Finding Dory ($1.03 billion), Toy Story 3 ($1.067 billion), Toy Story 4 ($1.073 billion), and Incredibles 2 ($1.24 billion), this would rank at least the sixth highest-grossing Pixar film ever. Given how close No. 4 through No. 2 are, Inside Out 2 could follow the lead of its opening weekend and finish second on the overall chart as well.
Examining the Film Inside Out 2
The follow-up to the 2015 original movie, Inside Out 2 features Riley, a young child with a literally head full of emotions. The all-star group brought to life the feelings teenagers experience as they develop, evolve, and adjust to new circumstances: Amy Pohler as Joy, Bill Hader as Anxiety, Mindy Kaling as Disgust, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, and Lewis Black as Anger. Currently under development, this sequel will see Amy Pohler returning as Joy alongside Riley, a now adolescent friend.
As Riley moves from childhood to adolescent, the film will explore the difficulties of changing to a new period of life. Riley's emotions will change and her relationship to Joy, Fear, Disgust, Sadness, and Anger will change as well; the audience is waiting to see how. The fresh emotions and how Riley's persona is affected will be fascinating to observe.
An Other Age for Pixar
Inside Out 2's popularity indicates Pixar is headed back on course. The studio seems prepared to carry on the legacy of producing cherished animated pictures, which have long history. Pixar has shown in Inside Out 2 that they are still able to produce Movies that are both provocative and fun.
Along with a sequel to the 2017 smash Coco and a Toy Story spinoff focusing on Buzz Lightyear, the studio is working on several additional ideas. Pixar is demonstrating with Inside Out 2 that they are still at the top of their game and ready to thrill viewers for many years to come.
