Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom? Marvel's Bold Choice and a Dark New Theory

Whoa, hold onto your Iron Man suits, folks! Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU – as Doctor Doom! That’s right. It happened at SDCC 2024. This was huge! And immediately, the internet went nuts!  How exactly will Marvel pull this off? A new dark theory suggests they've laid the groundwork since WandaVision. Let's dive into this crazy idea!

RDJ played Iron Man for over a decade, making this role and those movies his own; his role was totally synonymous with the character itself.   After his Avengers: Endgame sacrifice; a five year gap—this is going to cause some massive issues.  That announcement raised huge eyebrows. The theory attempts to resolve the impossible! That new approach, and role reimagining needs a clear explanation! This new, unexpected choice, needs strong reasons behind it, and it turns out the Darkhold already provides some amazing reasons for this surprising twist.

A compelling theory proposes Downey Jr. plays either Victor Von Doom OR a Darkhold-corrupted Tony Stark variant from another universe.  The Darkhold (first seen in WandaVision) is seriously powerful. This is a legendary book; packed with insane magic; its ability to give those who read it unbelievable power explains its extreme importance, and this might give the necessary link!

This dark artifact and its mystical lore would provide immense justification. We're talking about Doctor Doom using the Darkhold; overthrowing Latveria's ruler— and seizing the power and glory all to himself! It explains many of the other changes and makes them suddenly a possibility, without needing many additional connections from the rest of the larger universe which might’ve negatively affected other narratives if implemented!

This isn’t just some random idea—Doctor Doom HAS used the Darkhold in Marvel Comics. Way back in the '90s, he used a passage for Limbo access; but his later use is what's even more pertinent and really matters for that particular theory. He uses this thing in the Darkhold series (starting with Darkhold Alpha #1) – unlocking Chthon— an extremely powerful and incredibly nasty demon; showing that similar things can happen in this MCU theory. Doctor Doom plays a serious role in that Darkhold storyline— he’s even fighting Chthon alongside the Scarlet Witch.

And we also learn how many other important people had encountered this artifact in various timelines and other narratives which completely supports and adds greater weight to the importance given by this theory.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness links the Darkhold and Scarlet Witch’s mythology closely.  This means, if Doctor Doom got his powers through the Darkhold, he totally knows about the Scarlet Witch. And if the Scarlet Witch destroyed the book; this could be Doom's major reason to target the MCU's Wanda, explaining why some of his behaviors seem motivated entirely by revenge! It creates the entire context and dramatically ties multiple key events from different narratives; previously disconnected – and it now links these seamlessly to generate greater conflict in future releases!

This Doctor Doom/Darkhold theory totally makes sense. It links to past events cleverly and explains why Marvel might pick RDJ. It leverages that existing and already present mystery that was left in earlier releases, linking and connecting prior events.  This could mean Doctor Doom's ultimate revenge!   Whether Marvel really intends this – well, only time will tell! This clever narrative integration is simply something fans could potentially agree on as entirely credible! Regardless; we're definitely excited about what this totally unexpected reveal could do for the future! The suspense has never been so palpable and the uncertainty created truly excites audiences for future storylines. Fans really want this new Doctor Doom appearance.
