Deadpool's PG-13 Release Shows How The MCU Might Approach The Hero
Marvel Studios fortunately has the perfect answer to Deadpool's R-rated conundrum and can include him into the larger MCU realm. Fox renamed the film Once Upon a Deadpool after re-leasing it for a PG-13 audience following the release of Deadpool 2. Once Upon a Deadpool removed most of the violence and profanity that make Deadpool's live-action stories appealing for a more mature audience, but this allowed Fox to appeal to a younger audience and Deadpool used his own censorship button to ensure the film followed its rigorous PG-13 criteria.
Though very few of the real sequences in the film were altered, Deadpool bleeped out curse words and inappropriate dialogue between himself and Fred Savage using a censorship button. Once Upon a Deadpool let Once Upon a Droid be split into separate, intriguing sections by recreating sequences from The Princess Bride and having Deadpool read the narrative to a now-adult Fred Savage. This allows Deadpool regularly employ his censorship button, and Marvel Studios might copy this approach in next MCU Crossover projects with the Merc with a Mouth.
The Deadpool Movies Already Answered How The MCU Could crossover With The R-Rated Hero Without Ruining Him
Bringing Wade Wilson's Deadpool into the official MCU presents a major challenge for Marvel Studios. Given Deadpool's violence, vulgarity, and mature character in Marvel Comics, the only approach to fairly show him on-screen would be with an R-rating. Ryan Reynolds's live-action performances as Deadpool have been quite successful since two of the most watched films of 20th Century Fox's X-Men series are 2016's Deadpool and 2018's Deadpool 2. This becomes problematic, though, when Deadpool joins the MCU.
Marvel Studios has always given the family-friendly MCU first priority. But this will change when Deadpool & Wolverine arrive in 2024. Deadpool & Wolverine, the first R-Rated film in the franchise, will carry on the best features of Ryan Reynolds' previous exploits in his first stand-alone MCU story. This will also be Hugh Jackman's second R-rated performance; he let loose in Logan from 2017. Marvel Studios must be careful, though, in selecting a Merc with a Mouth fit for the MCU's regular viewers when integrating Deadpool to the bigger franchise.
Although Deadpool cannot always be rated R in the MCU, he still can be true to himself.
Starting with Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024, his solo MCU efforts will surely be R-Rated. Deadpool must be altered to fit a PG-13 rating, though, should he take part in next Crossover movies such as the Avengers projects in Phase 6. Although it may be shocking to see Deadpool in non-R rated movies, this will confirm him as a definite component of the larger series. Using the censorship button from Once Upon a Deadpool is the ideal fix even if this suggests Deadpool won't always be classified R in the MCU.
Having Deadpool with his censoring button will give chances for funny interactions between the MCU's pre-established PG-13 superheroes and the Merc with a Mouth. Deadpool can remain true to himself while working with the family-friendly MCU tones, and this might also increase excitement for the hero's own movies. Future solo films for Ryan Reynolds in the MCU might potentially show him working with other heroes, allowing surprising characters to join Deadpool in an R-rated universe.
