Nicholas Braun's Amazing Dual Role in Jason Reitman's 'Saturday Night'

Double Duty! Nicholas Braun's Amazing Dual Role in Saturday Night Explained!

Saturday Night: One Actor, Two Legends – How Nicholas Braun Pulled it Off!

Jason Reitman's Saturday Night (written by Gil Kenan and Reitman) is a star-studded comedy-drama that chronicles the frantic final moments before the very first broadcast of Saturday Night Live. And it gets even better; that insanely talented ensemble cast, including the ever-amazing Nicholas Braun (you know, Greg Hirsch from Succession), plays not one, but TWO iconic figures. This was an important decision from the Director which had to undergo some additional changes before that film officially entered production and was given the go ahead for its filming phase!

The movie centers around the legendary showrunner Lorne Michaels (Gabriel LeBelle); showcasing the amazing experiences within those 90 minutes before SNL's inaugural episode. Pure chaos! The movie expertly mixes hilarity and those dramatic, high-pressure moments.

But let’s talk about Braun. The Director Jason Reitman himself tells the interesting backstory around his decision-making process surrounding Braun in an interview with The Wrap.  Initially, Benny Safdie was slated to play Andy Kaufman, but the making of The Smashing Machine (from A24) changed those earlier plans completely.

Here's Reitman's exact quote: "We kept thinking about who could replace [Benny Safdie as Kaufman] ... we kept coming back to Nick Braun. At some point, we went, ‘Well, on ‘SNL,’ you can play more than one character. Why did you not do that in the movie?’"

Braun plays two wonderfully different, uniquely intense, and reserved individuals, completely demonstrating his versatility and ability. It was also not entirely easy for Braun; this additional demand really showed how skilled he is and is not a given for every actor, despite how strong that cast appears overall. He even opens the movie AS Jim Henson; flawlessly mastering those nuances from both their iconic styles; showcasing both of these artists’ talents in an excellent way and bringing an important element that makes many viewers more willing to enjoy it due to its deep exploration into lesser-known characters!   That means nailing the unique mannerisms, tone and especially, the particular style of humor each man brings. He poured himself completely into those iconic performances, which totally involved hours poring over internet videos of both men, totally mastering their actions. This is especially important given how intensely similar yet distinctly different those performers were. The incredible quality really sets the quality of Braun’s talent!  A massive effort; one not undertaken by many in Saturday Night's very capable ensemble.

It gets even more interesting:  Braun only got that double-duty assignment just a few weeks before they started filming, a perfect reminder about the challenges and frantic last-minute issues any large project encounters – highlighting that such unexpected adjustments were necessary even within Saturday Night's production itself. The effort required from Braun truly mimics this show's intense behind-the-scenes moments and pressure – both perfectly capture what creating such legendary entertainment means. That level of commitment made this film highly effective; and showed just how significant both men are! This additional work resulted in significant emotional weight. Both Kaufman and Henson are legends and their depictions require excellent accuracy. The ability from Braun to play these vastly different personas remains excellent and shows his true range, that acting talent many find incredible and worthy of mention. The level of creativity demonstrates the enormous amount of thought; effort put forth!
