New Titles & What They Mean: R-Rated Changes Explained, Rebel Moon Director's Cut

Cut New Titles & Their Meaning from Rebel Moon Director

Not only are the much awaited director's versions of Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon films getting a nice new R-rating; they also feature elegant new titles. Originally called Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, the first section has been changed to be Rebel Moon – Chapter One: Chalice of Blood. Originally called Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, the second section has been changed to Rebel Moon – Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness. Although the originals came PG-13, these Director's Cuts will be harsher and grittier R-rated. The new titles allude to the darker content one should expect in the R-rated editions.

Netflix has said that starting August 2 Rebel Moon Director's Cuts will be available. Originally PG-13, they waited four months between the first and second Rebel Moon flicks in their initial release. The streamer is dropping both director's edits on the same day, though, since the narrative has already been told and there are no surprises to be expected (save from all the sexual content and graphic violence allowed by the more flexible R-Rating). Snyder has given each the new title to reflect his assurance that the director's edits are two quite different films.

Chapter One Rebel Moon: Chalice of Blood Title Interpreted

The first Rebel Moon movie, A Child of Fire, has Kora fleeing her former life serving the Imperium as its original title suggested. It set up her redemption arc as she emerged from the fire and into the light to release Veldt from the tyranny of the Realm. Chalice of Blood, the R-rated variant's new title, speaks to another character. Princess Issa, the child saver destined to bring an end to all wars in the universe, was also known as "Pueri Salvatoris" and "The Redeemer."

Turning her rifle on the princess and firing her in a vicious coup planned by Balisarius was the worst mistake Kora had committed. The title can be alluding to this: the chalice filled with blood when Kora spilled the blood of the child savior known as "The Chalice." The mention of blood might possibly be a more clear allusion to the extra brutality in the director's cut. Although the PG-13 Rebel Moon movies were a somewhat bloodless affair, the R-rated versions show promise for boundary-pushing gore; the title's usage of the word "blood" might be an extension of that promise. Snyder has hinted to a two-part Rebel Moon trilogy.

Chapter Two Rebel Moon: Curse Of Forgiveness Title Explained

The second Rebel Moon picture, The Scargiver, had an original title referencing Kora recovering the nickname she acquired as one of the best killers in the Empire. Kora would inflict wounds upon the Imperium and its devoted servants instead of scarring the name of the Realm. Like Kora's terrible past, the new title for the director's cut, Curse of Forgiveness, also speaks to The most startling flashback in The Scargiver depicted Kora's attempt at killing Princess Issa. Using what was supposed to be her final breath, the princess forgived Kora as she lay dying.

That forgiveness has haunted Kora in the years since that deliberate killing. Although Princess Issa used her last hours to pardon Kora for killing her, Kora did not quite merit such forgiveness. She had to live with what she done still. Kora found it more difficult to live with the guilt just since the princess was shockingly decent-natured enough to pardon her killer at the crime scene. That is the "Curse of Forgiveness" the title alludes to. The forgiveness of a kid she sought to kill curses Kora.

Why Are the Cut Titles for The Rebel Moon Different?

It was easy to discount Netflix's announcement that it will be distributing PG-13 and R-rated versions of Snyder's Rebel Moon films as a marketing ploy. Since the Justice League fiasco, Snyder has become fixated on director's cuts; Netflix's first concern is acquiring as many "minutes watched." But the two Rebel Moon versions were really the outcome of a compromise between the director and the streaming behemoth. They agreed to create both since Snyder wanted R-rated Rebel Moon films while Netflix wanted PG-13-rated Rebel Moon films.

Snyder has argued consistently that these R-rated director's cuts are entirely distinct films than the PG-13 versions ever since they were announced. They are a completely distinct experience of the Rebel Moon story, not merely the original with more blood in the combat scenes and less cuts in the sex parts. Offering the R-rated versions their own Titles connects with Snyder's claim that they are unique rather than merely the same films.
