Recall Mr. Freeze, the Batman & Robin villain? The one having the terrible henchmen and icy puns? Indeed, even Dc Comics is realizing that Batman's henchmen Mr. Freeze's were a big error! And it's not a small error; it's a major one!
Mr. Freeze is presented in Harley Quinn #40 as a sober villain seeking respect. The ridiculous hockey mask henchmen and the cheesy ice puns are boring him. Mr. Freeze has even gone so far as to enlist Harley Quinn to assist in training a fresh batch of henchmen!
For a few reasons, this fresh alliance between Harley Quinn and Mr. Freeze is noteworthy. It gives Mr. Freeze an opportunity to atone and reveals that Dc Comics is realizing Batman & Robin's shortcomings. It also charts a different course for Mr. Freeze as he distances himself from the previous portrayal of a severe villain devoid of need for corny jokes and ridiculous henchmen.
Mr. Freeze is, after all, a multifarious character who is far more than just ice puns and ridiculous hockey masks. Driven to save his wife, he is more than ready to apply his scientific knowledge and intelligence to reach his objectives. But in Batman & Robin, he became a cartoon villain, and his henchmen served only as comic relief.
Harley Quinn #40 makes abundantly evident that DC Comics is seeking to separate itself from the "Batman & Robin" era. They want Mr. Freeze to be a more realistic character and treat him with the dignity he so merits. He will thus be stepping back from his ridiculous past and forward with Harley Quinn to establish a new villainous team.
Mr. Freeze's choice to abandon the Batman & Robin era behind is, all things considered, a good one. He is embracing a new direction of a well-considered and menacing character while divorcing his past as a one-dimensional, cheesy villain. We eagerly await Mr. Freeze's next moves since DC Comics is at last treating him seriously.
