Another Lord of the Rings Movie? Unraveling the Hunt for Gollum Mystery!

Get ready, Tolkien fans! A brand-new live-action Lord of the Rings movie is officially in the works! This exciting news comes after screenwriter Philippa Boyens cleared up some confusion caused by Ian McKellen (Gandalf) – a misunderstanding resulting in several inaccurate reports regarding what will appear in future films – who seemingly hinted at a two-part The Hunt for Gollum.   The actual plan is this: The Hunt for Gollum, directed by the legendary Andy Serkis (Gollum himself), will indeed be a single movie, yet will form the first part in a completely different production than what the initially announced two-part film had promised, hinting toward yet another completely new movie as part of a far larger franchise project already established. It is the beginning of something larger!

This exciting development is part of that big deal between Embracer Group, Warner Bros., and New Line, promising a whole slew of live-action Lord of the Rings films! The clarification involving that separate, and already existing production plans; hints toward what those plans really involve. Prepare for those awesome adventures, because it will explore untold stories and might involve our beloved Gandalf himself!

What Boyens Revealed: A New Movie (and Maybe Anime?) in the Works

In a chat with EmpireBoyens laid out exactly what we could expect in those future releases, specifically what will appear in future projects – particularly involving those projects surrounding Gollum, a specific character who is shown through different narratives throughout the original LOTR material.   She directly addresses what everyone misunderstood—making that clarification necessary– there is not one split film production;  The Hunt for Gollum is a standalone film. There's also, though unconfirmed as of now and possibly not happening ever, a suggestion that might explore another aspect of Lord of the Rings, potentially utilizing anime, because, as Boyens mentioned, that same story might fit extremely well.

Here's what Boyens said: "I can tell you definitively it isn’t two films! That was a genuine misunderstanding that happened because we’ve begun to work, conceptually, on two different live-action films. The first being The Hunt for Gollum, the second one still to be confirmed. [The Hunt for Gollum is] quite an intense story, which falls after the birthday party of Bilbo and before the Mines Of Moria. It’s a specific chunk of incredible untold story, told through the perspective of this incredible creature. [For the follow-up feature,] we’re playing around with a number of ideas, but most of those ideas do include Gandalf. So Gandalf would potentially return for two live-action films. We have an absolute banger of a second film that would just be incredible as an anime. But let’s see if there’s an appetite for it."

Implications for the Lord of the Rings Universe: New Possibilities!

That Hunt for Gollum movie wasn’t ever meant to be part of an already-existing larger planned franchise release, rather Boyens' comments show the intention for additional, separate, Movies, demonstrating an existing production framework involving at least two films at a minimum already established. Even with its still largely unconfirmed status and the very existence and details currently remain ambiguous for everyone; especially with those very intriguing and open hints concerning its potential as an anime project; this shows those creative explorations the studios are exploring.

Considering that McKellen’s Gandalf is possibly being considered, it also suggests those other productions concerning a possible production setting similar to that original LOTR trilogy. It makes sense, considering how this relates back to the time frame discussed earlier;  and those details concerning when Gollum was last mentioned or featured – meaning that that particular version must relate back to those very same years and plot.

It remains unclear though as those plans seem to be rapidly changing – especially with that very specific suggestion regarding a completely different project using anime, making some people compare it with that other upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.  Both these have those same potential connections and timeframe implications! Making the whole picture far more uncertain.

Our Thoughts: More Middle-earth Adventures On the Horizon

The news sounds amazingly promising for long-time Lord of the Rings fans. These decisions– to expand on the stories outside that Gollum storyline and avoiding The Hunt for Gollum’s initially promised and planned two-part film releases; the studio avoided a potential mess! This is really promising considering that previous experiences demonstrate just how bad an overly long runtime actually is. This is quite likely a wiser approach given past mistakes.

Conclusion: Middle-earth’s Cinematic Journey Continues

A new live-action movie means many more Lord of the Rings adventures! This confirms those separate storylines and different projects involved – particularly after the announcement clarifying Ian McKellen’s initial misunderstanding which led to a major re-evaluation concerning what was expected of that previously anticipated production. With those promising hints regarding additional, exciting possibilities– especially those involving anime. That future is surprisingly open, bringing tons of potential! All that added excitement regarding what might actually occur!
