Kevin Costner's 'Headhunters': New Movie After Horizon Box Office Flop

Kevin Costner, the legendary actor, is known for a lot of things, Westerns especially, and his new movie Headhunters might be the next big thing!

Headhunters: A New Project

The actor behind John Dutton in the wildly popular Yellowstone series has joined a new thriller movie, and will actually help write the movie, and even produce it!

After the less-than-stellar reception for his Western epic Horizon: An American Saga (which had a 51% critics' score and 70% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes ), Costner is stepping into a new genre. The movie didn't exactly perform well. Some believe the budget for this movie was around $50 Million, others $100 Million, regardless of which number is closer, the return on investment hasn't come close to paying for the cost of filming!

The Plot of Headhunters

The new film takes us to an awesome, yet mysterious setting- Bali, Indonesia. This is where Costner's character ends up and you are getting a sense from the beginning this movie is going to have exciting adventure scenes! In Headhunters, he plays a character that is very complex, described as "a washed-up American expat with a mysterious past." This sounds interesting enough but now this washed up man gathers a crew of surfers, together to find an awesome place with waves and beaches to do "surf competitions." There’s just one small thing that could stop the trip, that might stop him from ever enjoying his dream beach- it just happens to be the home of "an ancient tribe of headhunters!" That sounds crazy!

This movie isn't just big because it features a super popular actor. We're also going to get a director who made his big debut in the scene! Steven Holleran will take this to new heights!

One interesting cast member is Daniel Zovatto, an actor you might recognize from Station Eleven and The Pope's Exorcist (2023).

The Impact on Horizon

It looks like Costner was in a bit of a jam, too, with the latest film Horizon: An American Saga not doing well enough at the box office to proceed with production on any more films. In August 2024, Costner said he might put off filming the remainder of the Horizon franchise!

That was because he thought there were difficulties. Costner hoped to film "Horizon 3" and "Horizon 4" back to back.

Even with these possible setbacks, it's important for this talented actor to have a lot of work underway and to stay successful!

Headhunters and Costner's Future

Given what happened to his latest western movie, "Headhunters," seems like an important side project, which Costner might start after Horizon, it looks like Headhunters could come to theaters a few years later. It looks like things might be in place to continue with the western series though there might be financing issues.

While Kevin Costner is known for playing roles with some real grit! This upcoming movie will look very different! He's played lots of roles that showcase his ability. But even with his history, the thriller "Headhunters" could not only be a fun change! What could be very positive, especially in the face of a canceled series! The film's success would help this awesome actor bring his talents to the big screen, proving there is lots more in the making from such a memorable star!
