Joker: Folie à Deux Box Office: Did It Live Up to the Hype?

You'd think with a budget of over $190 Million for Joker 2 (or, as it’s officially called Joker: Folie à Deux!), a film with this iconic franchise would really blow things out of the water. Fans expected this, right? Maybe this could mean it won't live up to the amazing debut of its predecessor. It's truly hard to top those original $1 Billion box office totals, and this movie was coming out just five years after!

It turns out it was expected to get half of what the first movie earned when you look at just the Opening Weekend alone, at around $70 Million.

As it turned out The Hollywood Reporter reported that the Box Office is estimated to have brought in about $42 - $47 Million, that makes it a major shift from those earlier box office expectations! That's below the box office number that the first movie managed to earn in just its initial showing: $96.2 Million back in 2019!

With some big names like Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga you would expect something a little more amazing. For everyone wondering if there was some kind of negative feedback, well, the reviews did take a major hit. Fans who read them might be a little less thrilled, but with some audiences rating it pretty low, it is a clear message!

A quick rundown of some key platforms:

Rotten Tomatoes: it got a meager 32% rating for its review and from those audiences, they echoed a very similar, 32% score!
Meteoritic: its 4.1 out of 10 rating did not appear to resonate well with the public.
IMDB - also showed a major dip to an average rating of 5.3 out of 10!
Letterboxd - showed a really rough, 2.5 out of 5!

There was a clear reaction that didn't match up with how people thought it was going to turn out. These scores certainly create a very different vibe for those that love the franchise. It could have also been just how this movie came out at a time where there were so many others in October 2024. It didn't have the momentum it was looking for but this is a time where everyone is making big moves.

Will Joker: Folie à Deux Still Be a Hit?

Just because this was less of a huge hit. Doesn't mean the film is a complete bomb, right? There’s a good chance this will get more attention! However, these new scores might not make it easy to become super popular but with an epic cast including Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix they may bring even more eyes to the film! It might not be as huge as its predecessor but Joker: Folie à Deux might see a growth in those Oscar nominations early on in 2025. There is potential that it may still be a success!

However, if these totals were truly to make this film break even then, the goal will need to hit over $475 Million, or else Warner Bros might be in a rough position with such an expensive, big-budget production.

Fans who have already watched "Joker: Folie à Deux" and those who haven't! The debate about this show and whether or not it lived up to its predecessor will keep the show in the public's eye! And who knows, maybe it gets more views, making the overall Box Office totals greater! And we might see it become a box office success!
