In DC Comics' upcoming event Absolute Power, a member of the Justice League turns against his old allies. Mark Waid spoke with Screen Rant about the next story and explained why Green Arrow's shift to the dark side feels like a natural progression for Oliver Queen.
Absolute Power's Mark Waid spoke with Screen Rant about what fans may expect this summer. After talking about the story's adversaries, the subject shifted to Absolute Power's surprise traitor, Green Arrow. Waid was asked how he felt about portraying Oliver Queen, a usually left-leaning figure, as working for a fascist guy like Waller. Mark Waid: (laughs) Well, you could certainly argue that, for all of his left-wing tendencies, Green Arrow has always been the first to criticize the heroes for being too disconnected from the average man. As being less responsible to humanity than he believes they should be. That dates back 20, 30, and 40 years. So that works for me. Green Arrow's leap makes logic to me, but it may not to others. But to those people, I would advise them to wait it out and get back to me in a few months.
While Amanda Waller has mostly focused on ridding the Earth of Metahumans, she has kept an eye on certain humans who do not have powers, such as Team Arrow members. Green Arrow realized that Waller had made an agreement with his old adversary Merlyn to keep Queen's family apart in order to control Oliver. The Emerald Archer eventually faced Waller, and she offered Queen a deal: work for her in exchange for getting even with Merlyn and reuniting his family. Green Arrow consented and began going on missions for Waller as her personal agent.
Waid brings up an intriguing point: Green Arrow has a history of criticizing his powerful colleagues for their lack of concern for the lives of ordinary people. Of course, there is a distinction between Green Arrow keeping his friends accountable and deliberately assisting a psychopath like Waller in depowering and arresting his pals. Oliver has stated that he is "playing the long game" against Waller. Perhaps Green Arrow is using his history of calling out Superheroes as camouflage to conceal his actual motives while working with Waller.
Few people can deceive someone like Amanda Waller, but Green Arrow is in the ideal position to do so. Waller trusts Queen because he lacks powers and is ready to go against his heroic buddies. Queen takes advantage of this by pretending as a traitor to the world while secretly operating in the best interests of the metahumans. Of course, it will be difficult to determine what Queen is thinking until Absolute Power is released, but Waid is correct: It is clearly consistent with the Justice League member's personality.
