Gladiator 2 Review: A Worthy Sequel or a Disappointment?

The sequel to Ridley Scott's award-winning 2000 hit, Gladiator, was a project 24 years in the making! Producer Douglas Wick shared the scoop about this exciting project and the behind the scenes stories of making Gladiator 2 happen!

This time around, Paul Mescal steps into the role as the main character Lucius Verus. Mescal steps in to show the next generation and just how much power he truly has! He follows Maximus Decimus Meridius' ( Russell Crowe's character ) son and will fight his way through new, thrilling battles! Fans of this legendary movie won't be disappointed! Even those that never had a chance to experience the first Gladiator are going to have a whole new story to delve into!

CG Technology Makes A Difference:

There are so many stories in film productions but none more impressive than some of the real struggles they went through! Back in 2000 when Gladiator was created, the technology wasn't really capable of adding some wild animals that the producers originally hoped for! They had dreamed to show how crazy the Colosseum battles could get and it involved CGI elements with these animals!

Wick talked about how technology makes Gladiator 2 such a huge success.

They wanted a rhinoceros for the original Gladiator but CGI costs back then were astronomical.

There was a time Wick spoke to those in charge of animal handling. Apparently they shared how dangerous using these live animals could be, it also makes Gladiator 2 have some seriously awesome sequences that were totally impossible to create during the first movie.

Gladiator 2's Amazing Spectacle:

If you thought the original was awesome, this one's gonna blow you away! This one makes sure that everyone will be hooked!

Audiences can catch a glimpse of all these impressive elements, showing a level of chaos never before seen. The initial trailers brought us some pretty awesome sneak peeks and there are more exciting moments! While Maximus had some serious battles with a tiger and plenty of human opponents! Now, Lucius will face some almost insurmountable foes! Including other humans as well!

These amazing special effects bring to life just what makes Gladiator 2 so cool.

The action itself reflects Emperor Geta (played by Joseph Quinn) and Emperor Caracalla (played by Fred Hechinger)! The show really takes viewers on an epic adventure, with corrupt leadership creating intense battles. What is really impressive is that Lucius really has a tougher path to success and even though this movie shares similar plot elements and a similar tone from the first.

A New Generation Of Gladiators:

It may be considered somewhat strange for a sequel because it lacks some pretty key characters from Gladiator!

This really stands out as it creates an entirely unique experience but fans and new movie watchers really should focus on Lucius, his journey! He faces new, terrifying obstacles, the Colosseum is back again for many thrill seekers and there's even the appearance of an iconic actor in a role with plenty of depth and mystery. That includes Denzel Washington. What's more cool? It's just a Ridley Scott movie, as Scott was a producer as well as director, ensuring all these new additions maintain that very special tone that we remember, showing "Gladiator" for its legacy.
