Gladiator 2: Paul Mescal's Dad's Reaction and What It Means for the Sequel!

Paul Mescal's Gladiator 2 Casting: A Son's Dedication and a Father's Fanboy Frenzy!

Get ready for Gladiator 2! This highly anticipated sequel (arriving November 22nd) stars Paul Mescal as the all-grown-up Lucius, son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and the legendary Maximus (Russell Crowe). Mescal's casting caused a total fanboy meltdown – especially among his own father, which is a pretty amusing tale.

The movie itself follows Lucius under brutal Roman rule; it's a violent world; his father’s legacy fuels his vengeful quest against the very regime which had taken away those very precious things from him. The story will also star other huge names such as Denzel Washington (as Macrinus, a ruthless arms dealer), and Pedro Pascal (Marcus Acacius, a serious Roman general).

Mescal gave British GQ some great insight into that legendary 2000 original film! It is exactly what fuels this upcoming sequel: He recalled first seeing Ridley Scott's classic when he was about 14 or 15. He stated: "I remember watching it. I would’ve been about like 14 or 15, so around 2010. It’s one of my dad’s favorite films, so he lost his mind when he found out I was doing it. I think one of the great strengths of that film is how well it holds up. Me and my friends were down at my house. We decided to watch it again, which was kind of a painful experience for me, but they were just doing their homework, I suppose."
