Ridley Scott's Gladiator was a massive hit back in 2000 and now, a sequel is coming, Gladiator II! Fans have been waiting, it has been a long wait and finally we can learn what will become of Lucius.
The original Lucius, played by Spencer Treat Clark, won't be back! That's a shocker for some fans but there's a big name coming in instead: Paul Mescal. Mescal's fame grew from the series "Normal People" and even snagged an Emmy nomination! What makes Mescal's casting interesting is his history, an Irish actor and taking the lead as Lucius in Gladiator II!
Even with Clark stepping away from the series. It looks like he's keeping all the positive vibes coming for fans who want to know more! Clark had a good chat with People and nothing but great words for Mescal's talent. The response to the questions asked wasn't just supportive but also emphasized his joy at getting the chance to see this newest addition to this great Ridley Scott production. It even shows that he recognizes just how incredible Mescal has become.
If you didn't know about this, it has had quite a wild ride and wasn't really able to fully develop its plotline until now! The earliest discussion came up in 2001 about the plot!
Over the next couple of decades, Ridley Scott, remained steadfast and optimistic that there could eventually be an addition and even shared bits about it and teased his ideas and that finally happened in 2018.
There's another side to all of this as it appears Mescal's role wasn't simply something picked out of the blue. The big "casting change" wasn't out of disrespect but shows that there are plans in motion. In the newest movie we are taking Lucius, on an epic, crazy adventure where we follow the characters after his hometown gets conquered! Mescal takes that role as he joins Gladiator II which will bring out all the best moments!
Fans might wonder, just what really caused this big "switch?" Recasting "is" common, which means no real surprises! The movie itself though really seems to suggest that Scott is more concerned with age.
If you think it isn't possible, then Ridley Scott's re-imagining of Lucius may be tied to when the actual time period that this new Gladiator takes place in. So with that thought in mind there was a reasonable case to pick the 28 year-old instead.
There are plenty of times that this sort of recast happened! In fact, we have plenty of examples to give.
It's not as straightforward for Gladiator II. In fact it shows that this has a lot to do with acting talent. The actor Mescal may not be the most accomplished as Clark at this point in their career and lacks his experience. However. Mescal's recent nominations give an impression that Scott really believed that Mescal's talent and his potential is what the series needed!
What should fans be prepared for?
For fans of the movie, and who are excited to get more, the Gladiator universe continues in a compelling way, not only as an amazing follow-up from 2000's Gladiator, it looks like it could become one of the best movies of the 2020s!
