Will the Garfield film rank highest worldwide as well?
Apart from being the highest-grossing domestic film in the three-movie franchise, the Garfield Movie Box Office is significant enough to rank sixth worldwide at the time of writing. Once the worldwide opening weekend figures for the new Pixar film are counted, Inside Out 2 will probably soon overtake it, but given its rather low $60 million budget, Garfield is still really a success. It also has a chance to top the franchise globally in terms of gross income. The box office success of all three franchise movies is broken down below:
Title: Home B.O.; Global B.O.
Garfield: The Movie ($75.4 million; $203.2 million) 2004
Garfield: A Story of Two Kitties (2006); $28.4 million; $143.3 million
The Garfield Movie ($78.8 million; ~$190 million; 2024)
Though the whole worldwide results for the weekend have not yet shown, the Garfield Movie has greatly outgrossed the 2006 sequel A Tale of Two Kitties thus far. Still, there is a discrepancy of about $10 to $13 million between its present ranking and the top spot in the Franchise worldwide, which still comes from the 2004 film. Although operating in theaters for so many weeks has inevitably seen declining returns, the next chapter still has a chance of topping that $203.2 million total.
Garfield Movie Box Office Breaks Domestic Franchise Record Once Held By 2004 Film
In North America, the Garfield Movie shattered a big franchise Box Office record. Chris Pratt stars in the new animated film as the legendary lasagna-loving, Monday-hating orange cat that first appeared in the 1978 Jim Davis comic strip. Taking No. 2 behind Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the Garfield Movie rollout started overseas in early May before it launched at the home box office over Memorial Day weekend. To land No. 1 in its second Domestic weekend, it finally surged ahead of the failing post-apocalyptic action film.
By the end of its fourth weekend in American theaters, The Garfield Movie is expected to generate a 3-day total of $5.3 million per Deadline. This will raise the Domestic total overall to $78.8 million. Originally only earning $75.4 million in North America, the 2004 mixed live-action and CGI blockbuster Garfield: The Movie has now been replaced as the top movie in the franchise at the domestic box office.
The fresh Garfield
Drawing on Jim Davis's comic strip, Garfield is a fresh interpretation of the lasagna-loving cat and his companions using a completely computer-animated technique. With the movie focusing on his early years and fresh mishaps for him, his friends, and his family, Chris Pratt voices the title cat.
The character of the cartoonist in the movie has very charming quality. The dynamic quality of the story itself has drawn praise. The story itself is based on the comic's lore, hence it's an interesting viewing.
Strength of the Garfield Movie
Maybe due in part to the star-studded The Garfield Movie voice cast—which also features Samuel L. Jackson, Hannah Waddingham, Ving Rhames, Nicholas Hoult, and Snoop Dogg—the film is displaying a strong audience hold in North America. Although it will probably make less than $5 million domestically over each next weekend, with its overseas totals and its domestic grosses still in the seven-digit area, the movie could ultimately grab the top spot.
