Why Derek Morgan Should Come Back to Criminal Minds (But Won't)

Back in 2005, Derek Morgan first encountered Criminal Minds in the premiere episode, "Extreme Aggressor." From Criminal Minds season 11, he was a pillar on the series; when his actor chose to pursue other projects, Morgan was written off the program. The character has made sporadic but few appearances since then. Moore's returning visits were always appreciated on Criminal Minds since he is a charming and well-known series character.

Bringing back Morgan for Criminal Minds: Evolution would enable the show to be firmly rooted once more. But more of a barrier today than ever, Moore originally departed the show in order to pursue other paths for his career. Though he had a major part on the soap opera The Young and the Restless, the actor started on Criminal Minds was a relative unknown on primetime. Following Criminal Minds, he played as Randall in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and voiced Cyborg in several animated DC films.

Morgan's Criminal Minds: Return Chances Addressed by Showrunner Evolution Season 2

The second season of Evolution's showrunner discusses Derek Morgan's likelihood of returning. Shemar Moore plays Morgan on Criminal Minds, starting his tenure all the way back in 2005 when the show initially started. Currently running under the subtitle Evolution, the CBS procedural completed its 16th total season last year on Paramount+. Since then, Evolution season 2 has been announced and will broadcast on June 6. Criminal Minds

TVLine gets an update on Moore's potential comeback to Criminal Minds: Evolution from Erica Messer, the showrunner. Moore's participation in CBS's own S.W.A.T. means that the creative claims they "didn't have" opportunity to feature Moore in the first season and this seems to remain the case. Messer's quote is below:

Most importantly, Moore stars in the CBS series S.W.A.T., which Messer notes in her analysis.

Moore has only guest-starried in two Criminal Minds episodes since his S.W.A.T. premiere. This reality implies that Moore is not accessible for more and that his distance from Criminal Minds is still somewhat considerable. Although Messer did not completely rule out Moore's comeback to Criminal Minds, it seems Morgan's cameo chances in Evolution season 2 are almost nonexistent.

Moore personally has said he would be willing to go back to Criminal Minds should the chance present itself.

The Criminal Minds: Evolutionary Story
