The director of the critically praised sci-fi action movie Edge of Tomorrow, Doug Liman, has given an update on the much awaited sequel. Liman notes the major challenge presented by the film's time travel components even as he shows excitement for bringing Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt back together for Edge Of Tomorrow 2.
Liman revealed in a recent interview that the story of the sequel is proving especially difficult because time travel stories by nature are complex. He pointed out how challenging it is to create a gripping third act free of narrative contradictions inside the time-bending framework. "Time travel is rather difficult, on the other hand. Like truly, truly tough," Liman said. "All you have to do is create a movie with time travel to come to the conclusion that humans will never travel through time because it's hard to figure out a third act in a movie with time travel. I am therefore trying to break it even though I know for a sure humans are never going to travel through time."
Liman is dedicated to realize Edge Of Tomorrow 2 despite creative difficulties. Still, the project runs across several challenges outside the complex nature of time travel. Though highly praised, Edge of Tomorrow was not a box office monster, bringing $370.5 million against a $178 million budget. This modest success might have lessened the initial excitement about a follow-up.
Both Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt have also been quite involved in other projects, mostly Cruise with the Mission: Impossible. Although both performers show interest in returning in Edge of Tomorrow 2, their hectic schedules provide a scheduling difficulty.
Notwithstanding these obstacles, the sequel has some encouraging prospects. Involved is Christopher McQuarrie, who co-wrote the original movie and has grown close to Tom Cruise on the Mission: Impossible series. Furthermore supporting the project is Warner Bros., the company behind Edge of Tomorrow. The possibility of a sequel is strengthened even more by Tom Cruise's recent contract with Warner Bros. to create original and franchise Movies.
Edge of Tomorrow 2 could be an exciting and entertaining follow-up, but the long wait since the 2014 release calls questions. Time could influence audience interest particularly if the project stays in development limbo for a long time.
Edge of Tomorrow 2's success depends ultimately on several elements: breaking the complex time travel narrative, coordinating Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt's schedules, and keeping audience interest following a ten-year wait. Edge of Tomorrow 2 has the exciting return to the special universe of Cage and Rita Vrataski if Doug Liman and his crew can overcome these challenges.
