Dune Ending Explained: The Rise and Fall of Paul Atreides & Beyond

The Dune universe, created by Frank Herbert back in 1965, is a sprawling saga that's captivated audiences for decades. With movies, TV shows and books there's so much out there for the taking. But just how does this story come to an end?

The Rise and Fall of Paul Atreides

The story starts with Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet in the recent movie adaptations), a powerful, capable figure destined for greatness (or infamy depending on how you view it!) The Dune novels follow his journey to become a powerful leader on Arrakis, dealing with warring houses and galactic conspiracies. But that only is just a small portion of his adventures!

This includes the big battles with House Atreides and House Harkonnen and even gets to a point where he takes on Emperor Shaddam IV. The first Dune book really goes deep into his rise as a leader. With the powerful gift of foresight he’s trying his best to take a path that's best for humankind.

But there's one big snag. Even with that awesome ability, Paul knows his power is corrupting, leading to a galaxy-wide war in his name! In fact, there were something close to 60 billion people that die. What an interesting turn, don't you think? All in Paul’s name! Even he is aware he might not even be doing the best things possible!

Dune Messiah and the Death of a Messiah

In Dune Messiah, Paul's struggles intensify. Now the Emperor, Paul faces threats from powerful groups, such as the Bene Gesserit, the Spacing Guild and Tleilaxu all vying for his power! This means plenty of interesting schemes take shape as many characters attempt to unseat him!

This leads to a major sacrifice of Paul and even worse! In an almost tragic end, he’s forced to step down and accepts blindness, symbolizing his lost perspective! What was he trying to make up for? Maybe accepting his limitations! That may allow him to abandon the godlike role.

The God Emperor Leto II

The story continues with Leto II, Paul's son who is now the God Emperor of Dune! But get this: he’s actually half-human, half-sandworm—that's pretty wild, don't you think?!

It takes 3,500 years for Leto II’s rule as Emperor! During which time there's major control of spice, preventing much needed growth and keeping technology from ever developing to the most capable of forms.

It might sound bizarre and may remind you of what might occur in our own timeline with climate change!

In this movie there’s another fascinating role that’s pretty pivotal- Ghanima Atreides.

The Scattering and the End of the Saga

The series continues with Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse: Dune. It’s a story that sees humankind scattering throughout the galaxy for the betterment of society! The Bene Gesserit order plays a powerful role! It becomes clear as more threatening groups rise up that humanity will keep its chance at survival.

The very powerful stories keep making a real effort to bring this epic journey to life in exciting ways!

While Frank Herbert couldn't finish the series and sadly, he didn't finish it before he passed away. His son Brian Herbert and author Kevin J. Anderson helped put a cap to his great stories using what he left behind. The new chapters brought even more twists and even ended in Sandworms of Dune, wrapping it all up.

The Dune Movie Franchise

It looks like this movie franchise is only getting started and continues to give Dune fans plenty of excitement! It turns out, the big screen will just be adapting part of this vast storyline!

The recent movie adaptations focus mostly on Paul Atreides' journey.
There's still another installment from the directors perspective!
Expect "Dune Messiah" to continue and tell Paul's storyline. It seems unlikely there will be any further developments based on the movies.
That leaves the wild things, like Leto's transformations out of the adaptation!

If anything, expect there to be some awesome movie twists!

Expect big things to happen from the screen! And expect big shifts. Those involved with making this film really hope that they're able to show Paul's rise, and his terrible downfall. It will ultimately show how power really can corrupt, a real story of a powerful figure whose fate will never really be truly forgotten!
