A24 recently unveiled the initial trailer for " Death of a Unicorn " a new black comedy feature movie starring both Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd that immediately generated significant buzz. Alex Scharfman directed and wrote the film centering around the unlikely tale of father Elliot played by Paul Rudd and daughter Riley portrayed by Jenna Ortega. "Death of a Unicorn" will be releasing sometime in spring 2025.
The official synopsis of “Death of a Unicorn” details a father Elliot and daughter Riley as accidentally running over a unicorn during their road trip. The father-daughter duo find themselves caught in bizarre situation. The pair go on a weekend getaway where Elliot’s billionaire boss portrayed by Richard E. Grant attempts to use the magical properties of the dead animal. The trailer includes dark comedy from the initial hit-and-run along with increasingly desperate acts by Riley and Elliot who hide their shocking crime by any means they see fit. As their plot develops, Riley and Elliot realize the power of unicorn blood which has capabilities to cure cancer according to the film’s plot progression.
Alex Scharfman who previously served as a producer on both “Blow the Man Down” and “Resurrection” directed "Death of a Unicorn" making this a debut in such a role. Ari Aster the director of film’s like “Hereditary” joined on board as executive producer highlighting further the impressive pedigree of those involved with the movie. Iconic filmmaker John Carpenter along with Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies composed music for “Death of a Unicorn”. “Death of a Unicorn" has been a project that combines various impressive talented individual from the film making industry.
"Death of a Unicorn" includes a well balanced group of actors including Will Poulter who often works with horror-comedy type stories alongside Téa Leoni and Richard E. Grant all showcasing well known film skills. Additional support includes talented actors Anthony Carrigan Sunita Mani and Jessica Hynes rounding out cast with a high level of diversity among different talents involved . "Death of a Unicorn" brings on a variety of different personalities into play in what should be a powerful dark comedy story telling.
Filming for "Death of a Unicorn" took place throughout July of 2023 in Hungary continuing even during the SAG-AFTRA strike periods after waivers were acquired and given by SAG AFTRA. Tyler Campellone and Lars Knudsen produce “Death of a Unicorn” through Square Peg with Tim Headington and Theresa Steel Page at Ley Line Entertainment collaborating and with Drew Houpts and Lucas Joaquin serving as producers via Secret Engine with high expectations on the final movie quality. The film which is produced by notable studio film makers will be available sometime in the spring of 2025 .
“Death of a Unicorn” shows the unexpected bond formed between father Elliot and daughter Riley as they come together as an effective unit after accidental killing the unique animal.
