What are Some of Hollywood's Biggest Summer Box Office Flops?
There are some amazing movies out every summer. Everyone looks forward to the summer blockbuster season with those Summer Movies and huge stars! But every once in a while, a movie just completely flops! They miss the mark even with those massive budgets. It’s kinda wild to think these movies cost millions to make but failed to make any money. It really makes you wonder: How can Hollywood sometimes make such a huge mistake!
What Makes a Summer Blockbuster Fail?
- We're talking about some serious Hollywood flops, here - some seriously losing millions at the box office! There are tons of reasons why. They didn't hit that summer box office that Hollywood is going for! They have big casts and star-laden casts, but it's a combination of factors that really do make them crash and burn!
- It could be bad timing - not everyone is into what's being released, the marketing is not effective enough or there might be way too many awesome movies that make other big movies fade in comparison. Sometimes you even see movies that should be amazing flop super hard! It's an example of how those best-laid plans can go horribly wrong.
- Sometimes the films even go on to be reevaluated - or gain a bit of a cult following later. But at the time, it was just a total disaster. It's the sad part!
Are These Flops Really Bad Movies?
You have to remember, Financial success doesn’t always make a great movie. And if you are just judging by how much a movie makes, it’s easy to dismiss films.
- One movie everyone thinks was a total flop - The Lone Ranger - Disney just took a big risk on that classic Western hero, but it didn’t have that spark, it turned out! It was really expensive, especially after the production kept getting pushed back and that budget ballooned. The reviews were mixed, which doesn't help!
- Another huge one - John Carter was supposed to be a big win! You know those Edgar Rice Burroughs sci-fi novels, with that Barsoom series and all? That movie about Disney's John Carter took us to Mars and those really amazing, visually impressive fight scenes! The problem was that the plot, marketing and effects just weren't the greatest - especially after Disney put in so much money into making it.
These were the biggest flops - they even had those huge budgets. Remember the The 13th Warrior with Antonio Banderas! It was a combo of fantasy and Vikings, but all those reshoots and delays messed things up. There was also a bit of that problem with Cutthroat Island starring Geena Davis! Disney's Tomorrowland - you can't miss that! Walt Disney gave it a try! George Clooney even starred, too! It's really crazy that, after those sci-fi action-adventure movies, Disney would fail. They even did an animated Roald Dahl movie called The BFG starring Steven Spielberg, too! Talk about stars. "The Adventures of Pluto Nash" - a Sci-fi comedy with Eddie Murphy. He always makes people laugh. These movies were just so risky they couldn’t handle the pressure and lost millions at the box office!
