Beetlejuice 2: The Near-Miss Title That Almost Ruined Everything

Beetlejuice 2: How the Original Title Almost Ruined the Sequel's Genius!

Beetlejuice: A Tim Burton Classic – How its Name Became Iconic

Tim Burton's Beetlejuice (1988) is a bonafide classic. It’s got those quirky Burton touches—that perfect blend of horror and humor—making it memorable! It’s earned tons of money ($74.8 million worldwide!) becoming a cultural icon that eventually warranted a sequel (Beetlejuice 2, a whole 35 years later!). This sequel itself managed to make use of that original success by following Lydia Deetz's daughter; using creative plot points that worked well and created many surprisingly memorable scenes for all audiences, continuing that strange Burton aesthetic which created those fantastic scenes for those who experienced the original and gave newcomers something familiar yet fresh!

Beetlejuice uses various effects techniques and perfectly blends those stop-motion sequences to add layers to an already fantastic story, becoming one of Burton’s most memorable, instantly recognizable creations. And one major thing contributed to its lasting success – that incredibly creative name itself!  Yet we might discover it could've been totally different!

Warner Bros.' Near-Miss: How "House Ghosts" Would've Ruined Everything

Get this – Warner Bros. almost changed the title! They suggested House Ghosts because they thought "Beetlejuice" was too weird!  That boring alternative was likely made to appeal toward those who find that the name somewhat unsuitable for this kind of movie! And believe me – that almost ruined the sequel's potential and likely impacted its eventual commercial success. Those more creative decisions resulted in this sequel’s brilliance; whereas using that completely less appealing and easily forgettable alternative like "House Ghosts" would make any sequels far, far more generic. Think "House Ghosts 2"— YUCK. Instead, we got Beetlejuice Beetlejuice; a masterpiece and instantly creative.

This sequel’s naming genius references the character's summoning ritual (repeating his name thrice) – it's genius. The name also sets up this brilliant trilogy possibility–Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice—even without a confirmed third installment.   This creative choice helped make the entire storyline more recognizable and this is the creative brilliance and imagination at play, only available when decisions involved such deep understanding and anticipation of its viewers. That perfectly catchy name demonstrates a key element and decision in making Beetlejuice memorable—a name and strategy that worked so well in Beetlejuice 2!

That totally bizarre, totally unforgettable name is a huge part of Beetlejuice's iconic status, perfectly following that Burton trend, with such unusual names: FrankenweenieParanormanEdward Scissorhands, and 9, that amazing name sets the scene, creates instant memorability, and is totally memorable because of how unusual the title itself is, contrasting with the various names for various horror franchises; especially from those classic horror productions! The name is great!

And a possible Beetlejuice 3 is always in play, and should it become realized; this amazing name also provides another unexpected outcome, and that possible opportunity for that first-ever Tim Burton trilogy would bring new dimensions! However, even without that sequel, that decision already proved completely genius in retrospect, really showing that creative brilliance from multiple angles at the start!
