Alien: Romulus sequel - What We Know So Far!
Alien: Romulus Sequel Confirmed! Rain and Andy Are Back, Baby!
Get ready for more Xenomorph action, folks! Alien: Romulus, which absolutely destroyed the box office (over $350.7 million worldwide!) wasn't just a good horror movie–it gave fans some seriously awesome new characters! The ending really emphasizes how amazing and creative these characters were; and those survivors, Rain (Cailee Spaeny) and Andy (David Jonsson), are officially coming back for a sequel!
20th Century Studios boss Steve Asbell spilled the beans in an interview with THR. The sequel's still early days— they're still working out the story and Fede Alvarez (who directed Romulus) isn't fully signed on yet. However, Asbell confirmed the sequel plans; making it very, very certain for the future. It even confirms who’s leading this next adventure: Rain and Andy!
Here's the juicy part from that interview: "We’re working on a sequel idea now. We haven’t quite closed our deal with Fede [Alvarez], but we are going to, and he has an idea that we’re working on. The two survivors, Rain and Andy, played by Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson, were real highlights of the film. And so I always think of it like, “Wow, where do people want to see them go next?” We know there’s going to be Aliens. We know there’s going to be great horror set pieces. But I fell in love with both of them and I want to see what their story is."
What's Next for Rain and Andy? A Trip to a Truly Terrible Place?
Romulus' ending shows Rain and Andy entering cryo-sleep, headed towards Yvaga. Alvarez hinted at that destination ("a terrible place" rather than that nice paradise they had been envisioning in the prior scenes before escaping.) It's definitely going to generate much-needed suspense and it does add a level of needed anticipation and urgency and we know what that means; intense horror, and yes, aliens!
A sequel’s timeline? Well, it takes time to do good work! Alvarez himself noted how a rushed sequel is never really smart, and that it should "never be made in two years," needing ample time; thus needing that kind of thoughtful consideration for future adventures; so it’s a huge surprise, although completely understandable that these things would only come later on in time. So don't expect anything until probably around next year or so; adding to that fact that we would expect Alvarez needs time and additional development time, pushing it back even later—filming possibly around 2026, with a possible 2027 release.
Why an Alien: Romulus Sequel Is Needed: A Legacy That Lives On
Romulus did incredibly well critically; and at the box office, totally showing a very large, active fanbase that enjoyed the content; however it does show many interesting ideas to add further depth into the world. Many things were lacking from past Movies; yet the new direction that Romulus showed provided unique innovations that still maintain the old formula that makes it familiar. This entire story can explore a new side entirely!
Rain is truly a great choice! This strong character can definitely take over as that badass heroine we all missed since Ripley and Andy? He makes for some serious compelling storylines, especially concerning that mysterious Android and how that unique background could expand in this vastly unexplored universe! This combination presents a compelling and entirely original plot that fans have never encountered and truly provides compelling storytelling opportunity.
Conclusion: Get Ready for Another Ride in the Xenomorph's World!
A sequel is awesome, folks. And getting those amazing lead actors back is a surefire sign of commitment from those who manage this very exciting and vastly profitable franchise. There’s lots of opportunity, both creating further intensity and showcasing just why this would continue the great legacy and innovations found within this reboot. And those few years? Those only bring anticipation; thus building excitement which generates much-needed support from that devoted fanbase. Even though it’s not a guarantee, the continued development within this universe has incredible potential.
