In the most recent issue of Wolverine: Blood Hunt #3, the venerable X-Men hero Wolverine—known for his fierce fighting ability and amazing healing power—has shockingly changed. Under a strong Vampire threat, apparently unbeatable mutant Wolverine has found a weakness that might cause him to change into a vampire himself.
In his continuous fight against vampires, Wolverine's healing factor—his Achilles' heel—also defines his strongest suit. Against Wolverine's healing ability, the Vampire enzyme—which infects people and turns them into vampire—is useless. The comic reveals, though, that Wolverine's healing ability is not perfect. Turning around this immunity requires momentarily turning off Wolverine's healing factor.
Wolverines creates a vulnerability by purposefully cutting his midsection with a katana that lets the vampire enzyme pass through his system. This calculated self-inflicted damage, a severe action, creates the portal to a hitherto unanticipated force: vampire power.
By embracing vampirism, Wolverine gains a great range of fresh talents, so augmenting his already great strength. He develops enhanced senses including night vision, more speed and power, and a bloodlust driven by his combat instincts. This metamorphosis gives Wolverine's character a fresh perspective and drives his savagery to a still more primordial level.
Although Wolverine's vampire abilities seem to solve the vampire threat, they also create fresh hazards. His newly acquired skills might send him down a perilous road and blur the lines separating hero from villain. His new power could entice him to embrace his bloodlust, so transforming him into the exact monster he is trying to eradicate.
Beyond his own metamorphosis, Wolverines's vampirism has consequences. Together with the vampire enzyme, his unusual metahuman bloodstream could produce a new type of vampire—one with regenerative powers. Such a hybrid could challenge even the most strong defenses, so endangering the planet even more.
From his first appearance in 1974, resilient and erratic character Wolverine has been pillar of the X-Men universe. Renowned anti-hero, he works on the brink of morality and frequently employs cruel methods to reach his objectives. A monument to his complex and captivating character, Wolverine's readiness to welcome darkness—even if it means sacrificing his humanity—showcases his will.
In the long and dramatic life of the character, Wolverine's metamorphosis into a vampire is a daring and surprising change. This other road begs issues about his nature of power, his limits of humanity, and the possible results of his activities. Though his path as a vampire is obviously going to be a wild ride, the future of Wolverine is unknown.
