From the very start of their meeting in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Mace Windu sensed trouble! It's an important story, for Star Wars fans, to discover why. But it also reminds us of some of the big points about the story arc and Star Wars universe!
This is a very compelling aspect of the series. While Yoda was questioning Anakin on the dangers of the dark side, Mace Windu had major concerns, mostly surrounding his distrust of Anakin, which was apparent from their first meeting. It was evident during Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace that there was tension surrounding the boy! You have to ask - is it reasonable that a legendary Star Wars character like Mace Windu, known as the one of the Jedi Council's strongest leaders, could have accurately seen Anakin's future?
A bit of an odd situation. Fans are constantly discussing Star Wars canon and the choices the Jedi Council made! The Star Wars timeline and what was going on with the galaxy also had an impact. Although it was the Jedi Council, specifically Qui-Gon Jinn, who suggested Anakin was the prophesied "Chosen One" in the series, you can imagine why someone as experienced and powerful as Mace Windu could have concerns, and even a strong degree of Star Wars distrust of such a child! He sensed the young boy was very powerful with the Force, but he could also sense an amount of fear within the young Anakin Skywalker!
The prequel trilogy gives insight into Anakin's personality, specifically his "unpredictable" nature! As we move through Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones and into the animated series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Mace Windu did not let his doubts fade. He remained very cautious when dealing with the young Anakin, keeping a watchful eye over his actions.
Although it's not as clearly shown on screen, Star Wars lore suggests there was ongoing friction! The tension that had always been present in Anakin, particularly in his relationship with the Jedi Council, is really brought to light during this conflict. This was evident in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, when Anakin expressed his frustrations about his role in the Jedi Order and felt it was unjust!
Mace Windu, was incredibly uneasy about the level of closeness that was present between the young Jedi and the Chancellor. The prequel trilogy makes it quite clear! A central part of this relationship stems from Anakin Skywalker's relationship with Palpatine, which turned into an ongoing power struggle, and this contributed to Anakin's ultimate fall.
This is probably the one of the biggest, most painful events that shaped Star Wars history. The conflict that ultimately led to Mace Windu's death is closely tied to his ongoing distrust. It resulted from Mace confronting Palpatine directly as he sought to intervene with a dark side attempt to gain absolute power. This ended up playing right into Palpatine's plans, and led to the deaths of a huge number of Jedi, but especially Mace Windu!
