Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU) mostly runs separate from the MCU, showcasing different events within separate timelines! But Venom: The Last Dance connects to it big time, making a multiversal mess! Understanding that means watching several key films first.

4. Venom (2018): The Birth of a (Surprisingly) Heroic Duo

This movie introduces Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock, bonding with Venom. Unlike the comics, Eddie and Venom become surprisingly heroic and sympathetic and this is entirely a critical part for that movie; demonstrating just how significantly it impacted character development and the themes portrayed. Their bond goes from mistrust to this really bizarre teamwork; entirely essential in that initial film and lays down important aspects of character development that we encounter again.

Venom also introduces symbiotes – explaining Venom’s place as a survivor amongst many, introducing the Life Foundation (this organization uses symbiotes for bad things) and Riot (a symbiote baddie) and its ending completely sets the foundation for that incredible expansion that the symbiote lore will create, becoming an ever more prominent storyline and is important, because the storyline within those sequels completely expands the implications of those introductory points from the first installment, showcasing the necessity to revisit this early introductory title in that cinematic franchise!

3. Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021): A Deeper Bond, and a Multiversal Hint

This one is key.  It develops Eddie and Venom’s relationship– that blend of lighthearted and tense moments creates surprising excitement!  This sequel also makes things significantly more intense!  We see Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson) and his Carnage symbiote— this introduces way more dangerous symbiotes; all crucial elements for what transpires in the next installment, where Knull (that major threat) appears. The important aspects introduced were multiple symbiote forms. This is essential and shows greater diversity amongst this species of alien lifeforms, adding great complexity for that existing story arc!

The mid-credits scene is massively important! This reveal shows symbiotes sharing knowledge across multiverses; suggesting some kind of hive mind; and also transporting Eddie and Venom into the MCU!  This moment in this series highlights the importance of its multiversal aspects, completely connecting this series directly to the MCU storyline and those connected multiversal threads and continuity! Those important crossover moments are further developed throughout that franchise.

2. Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021): Multiverse Mayhem and Venom's MCU Interlude

This one proves essential because this title is why we're already considering many elements from that mid-credits scene within Venom: Let There Be Carnage!  Spider-Man: No Way Home makes that MCU's multiverse official. It showed that multiverse's ability to connect wildly different Marvel Cinematic Universe characters, explaining why Eddie Brock appeared. It’s all connected, demonstrating that connection that many MCU and symbiote fans always anticipated! It shows the possibilities involved!

The post-credits scene’s importance continues to increase; featuring Eddie (attempting to understand the MCU) before getting transported back! But, and it’s a big one – a piece of Venom’s symbiote gets LEFT BEHIND in the MCU!  That's huge! The trailer for Venom: The Last Dance actually features that very same bar scene, strongly hinting at what’s to come— expect more multiversal adventures!

1. Spider-Man 3 (2007): Venom’s First Cinematic Appearance (and its Unexpected Importance)

Now this is an unusual one! This Sam Raimi movie starring Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man and Topher Grace as Venom is insanely relevant! It foreshadows many symbiote elements within those later installments and it becomes unexpectedly relevant when that multiversal symbiote-hive mind concept got confirmed, because now that symbiote-multiverse connection and Tobey Maguire’s continued existence in the multiverse establishes something pretty unexpected.  This makes this far older entry suddenly significant because it hints toward plot possibilities later, involving potential crossover encounters in the future!

Venom’s portrayal is also different!  This version is really, really vicious and malevolent and shows much greater potential menace than Hardy’s version!  This contrast, with Knull’s introduction adds even more impact. The connection that Eddie Brock has;  the same Venom from Spider-Man 3 might actually reappear!
