Venom: Let There Be Carnage Slays at the box office!
Venom: Let There Be Carnage, the third and final installment of Sony’s symbiote-fueled trilogy starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock and Venom, had a huge global opening of $175 million. That sounds pretty amazing, right? It’s especially surprising since the film opened relatively modestly in North America – earning only $51 million which fell drastically below the projected $65 million and also compared poorly to the earlier entries. That initial domestic response was very concerning compared to expectations, the number released were much lower than previously set values which might show concern on the part of producers.
However, those overseas markets totally picked up the slack and greatly influenced its financial performance in several different markets. That incredible $124 million haul from 64 markets makes it one of this year's best international openings for a Hollywood movie. China totally led the way with a massive $46 million over five days. This isn’t surprising. Many audience members and reviewers alike found major issues with some of the plots.
Despite mixed reviews (37% on Rotten Tomatoes), a low "B-" on CinemaScore, that kind of financial success, demonstrates that there were elements the public still wanted to watch. Those numbers might be less than earlier numbers– the original Venom brought in $80 million on its debut, Venom: Let There Be Carnage hit $90 million (pandemic recovery aside!), however the budget was low compared to other superhero movies like Deadpool & Wolverine or Joker: Folie à Deux (over $200 million each). And this demonstrates one aspect many don't think about. Budgets aren’t the only aspect and often don’t justify a return.
This article delves deeply into several of those aspects that are far more exciting; not just focusing on plotlines related to Tom Hardy’s portrayal of Eddie Brock; it examines these more profound and unexpected possibilities implied, not explicitly stated.
That mid-credits scene hints toward some incredible upcoming narratives: The arrival of Knull the Symbiote God. This notorious character threatens an entire King in Black storyline— a potential SSU invasion which opens several key narratives and exciting possible worlds in the Sonyverse!
We see a very exciting introduction of the incredibly intriguing Agony, potentially taking on a more prominent role! This iconic symbiote (previously mentioned in the first Venom movie) could change this storyline and create interesting new themes in a potential future entry. This particular female symbiote appears here briefly but has immense significance for future productions.
The introduction of Dylan Brock, Eddie Brock's son from Marvel comics suggests future possibilities: Dylan becoming the next host. A very creative path which showcases an enormous amount of possibilities that the developers might just want to utilize; creating those incredibly unexpected narratives based on other material available in other stories and characters from this universe; highlighting the very large interconnectedness between storylines in the comics!
That post-credit scene? The obvious death doesn’t truly resolve this narrative. That tiny bit of Venom left behind creates numerous opportunities. Venom’s possible return through other possible means; some completely impossible to currently perceive, completely opens up several exciting, surprising narrative threads and possibilities not fully revealed here, that could be a significant topic for other releases.
A potential clue involves a mysterious phrase: “reconstituted the six.” It's either a reference to a new unit, or a nod towards the Sinister Six, creating those very surprising possible upcoming story threads, further indicating an intense conflict within the next iteration in that developing Sonyverse which is currently unconfirmed but easily imaginable, considering Sony’s various attempts to fully embrace this aspect.
That $175 million opening is still massive and makes people take notice. Even that disappointing domestic start becomes negligible, compared to international appeal. Those numbers, however, really aren't all the way there. That opening remains slightly less than anticipated, yet higher than other projects recently, making its success reasonably ensured, despite not entirely achieving its previously expected gains. However, these very mixed reviews (low CinemaScore) and audiences who already appear somewhat weary; this lack of excitement from some parts of the viewing audience demonstrates some significant changes which will have consequences; creating uncertainties about potential returns, regardless of this initially positive start.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage had a complex box office result, showing significant gains in one arena yet surprising lackluster results in another area; these opposing situations however become negligible in the wider context of the whole box office return. While a conclusive judgment requires an examination beyond its opening weekend; this initial impact still displays an unexpected level of interest, and that interest will influence future investment in this franchise. This release did set the stage for even bigger plots! Knull's threat, Agony's unknown potential and more really provide that exciting set of hooks and cliffhangers which make this worth watching even if that final entry’s overall results fail to entirely meet previously established values, creating those cliffhangers necessary to continue in some later release; however many viewers are now less interested which affects future sales.
