Venom 3: Unmasking Knull – The King in Black's Arrival and What It Means for the Sonyverse!
Venom: Let There Be Carnage finally unleashes the big bad of the symbiote saga, the incredibly powerful Knull, a character from Marvel Comics! The anticipation for this film was through the roof. It's generally agreed that this film really showcases a high point for this entire Sony Spider-Man universe; surpassing even previous high-points set by other installments in the past and this particular choice of character was met with universal excitement. The previous installments (which largely lacked many serious elements, leaving them mostly enjoyable yet deeply unmemorable) largely succeeded and established its overall status, outshining the seriously lackluster Morbius and Madame Web.
And Knull was that awesome antagonist fans longed for; this villain is incredibly pivotal; responsible for creating the Symbiotes themselves. This was more than just throwing in a big bad for fanservice; he plays an enormously pivotal role; even having important lore elements and character arcs relating directly to many of the central points! That massive reveal had people seriously hyped!
Before Venom 3, let’s quickly go over Knull's history! Initially, Knull was introduced as a major player in that vast cosmology. A primordial god of darkness living in that cosmic void— which made him one of those extremely significant, even universal players in Marvel's vast cosmology; he remained the big threat within many dimensions!
The Celestials mess with his void and introduce light! That's incredibly problematic; because it affects that enormous area in which Knull controls, resulting in Knull retaliating by creating an army using the incredible power found in that space, the power and influence available only to those living in that mysterious, powerful dimension. This made it far, far more powerful than otherwise initially expected!
He builds a symbiote army, using them to conquer dimensions— eventually landing on Earth, but only to get knocked around by Thor. The resulting survivors merge with hosts, adding these crucial elements of human morals, eventually turning them against Knull— trapping him on his own planet for a massive time. Yet, due to conflict between Venom and Carnage, Knull is released; only to have an ultimate defeat where that mysterious force that many may never fully know gets absorbed into that body of Venom, giving Eddie Brock the power needed to ultimately overcome him.
It is worth emphasizing that this enormous battle involves multiple significant Marvel characters which showcases the enormously profound reach and impact that Knull already has within the Marvel Comics universe. These points greatly increased the anticipation for this particular installment; even providing that long-awaited answer that every fan truly desired and sought after; demonstrating that this was far more than some temporary big-bad, a huge, extremely serious villain that added serious intrigue!
Knull's powers in Marvel Comics are insane! It’s connected to this manipulation of the Living Abyss— that darkness allows him to create and control that massive army! Knull has godly abilities – superhuman strength, crazy durability and ridiculously fast healing.
But this thing goes even further. This cosmic dark energy manipulation— these dark blasts utterly defeat several really powerful Marvel characters and makes Knull into the extremely imposing and extremely formidable antagonist in this film that only a few people could ultimately overcome. That godlike immortality— he existed through time itself! He battles against these amazingly powerful characters again and again; he still manages to mostly survive. And while he got his physical form disintegrated, his consciousness remained within the symbiote collective. His influence could still endure despite being defeated; making it entirely likely his return and another future storyline will surely develop, only now amplified after those events. And these powers showcase a character fully capable of existing across various locations throughout Marvel's enormous setting.
Venom 3 isn’t a perfect match of its comics counterpart! He’s still imprisoned— but yet to fully escape, motivating all his later activities throughout this entire storyline. This film's reliance on some of these uniquely introduced concepts such as the “codex,” a magical item that could free Knull demonstrates a deliberate choice which highlights some of those differences. However, this specific detail doesn't feel tacked on; adding greater context. It creates intrigue.
Andy Serkis, already involved as the director in the previous movie, takes on the Knull role, solidifying that important connection! Serkis’s legendary history in motion capture acting (think Gollum in Lord of the Rings!) ensures that incredible performance that fans already eagerly anticipated from an experienced and extremely qualified veteran of motion capture filmmaking!
Kelly Marcel (director) made some insightful comments before Venom 3’s release— hinting that this isn’t the end of Knull! And this remains largely true! His appearance remains rather limited – he uses those newly introduced Xenophages to hunt that crucial codex that would eventually allow Knull his freedom and the ability to move about much more freely after so many events and struggles in his early years! This specific decision isn’t made in poor faith; it's not some attempt to reduce a story and save money. Rather it provides far more intrigue.
Knull may not dominate Venom 3, he remains this monumental threat that the ending shows the very reasons why this antagonist is truly effective, why he becomes such an amazing character, despite a very brief and limited time onscreen, showcasing some enormously grand ideas regarding both Knull himself as a uniquely designed cosmic god capable of creating enormous power levels through the manipulation of others, only emphasized even further after he fully awakes from imprisonment; his very brief, highly intense presence is going to propel his role and that particular presence in future installments.
Kelly Marcel teased future Knull stories; Venom 3’s ending certainly emphasizes that: those plans look amazingly promising and could develop a series of interesting adventures that can showcase this huge, extremely significant, even extremely powerful Marvel villain’s future influence upon the Sony Spider-Man universe; providing that perfect reason to expand upon these plots. And many are speculating exactly just what that might possibly be; making Venom 4 already highly anticipated before even official announcements are made, showing the long shadow and impressive character development of this cosmic villain, despite appearing only briefly within this latest installment, hinting towards his extremely profound power levels and importance throughout this series’ storylines.
