vanished into the night: an engrossing crime thriller
With strong similarities to the critically praised 2013 film Prisoners starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Netflix's latest crime thriller, Vanished Into The Night, has become a popular choice for viewers rapidly.
Renato De Maria directs and Francesca Marciano and Luca Infascelli wrote the horrific story of Elena Walgren, an American psychiatrist who moves to Italy in search of love. Her relationship breaks down, though, and a custody dispute results. Elena's two children disappear leaving her and Pietro stunned while she is seeing their father. A menacing phone call demands a payback of 150,000 euros, which throws them into a frantic race against time to save their kids.
Vanished Into the Night's Cast
Riccardo Scamarcio plays the unhappy father, Pietro La Torre, Annabelle Wallis plays the driven mother, Elena Walgren, Massimiliano Gallo plays Nicola, Gaia Coletti plays Bianca, and Lorenzo Ferrante plays Giovanni. Inspired by the Argentine-Spanish film 7th Floor (Séptimo), Vanished Into The Night finds ideas in another subgenre of crime thriller. This gripping movie explores the depths of parental desperation and the extent parents would go to defend their children.
Prisoners: Still another Crime Thriller About Missing Children
Under Denis Villeneuve's direction, prisoners center on two young girls going missing. Following Detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal) as he looks at the case, the movie negotiates the emotional upheaval of the families and the disturbing riddles about the vanishances. Like Vanished into the Night, Prisoners looks at the sinister side of crime and emphasizes the extent parents will go to in their unrelenting search for their children.
Though the themes of missing children and parental desperation are shared, Vanished into the Night and Prisoners has quite different storylines. With its complex story and startling turns, Prisoners provides a closer examination of the psychological complexity of the individuals and the moral uncertainty of justice. Vanished into the Night, on the other hand, presents a more direct approach to the story and emphasizes mostly the immediate need of rescuing the children.
Evaluating Critical Reception of Vanished into the Night and Prisoners
Both movies have received rather different critical responses. With an 81 percent Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an Oscar nomination for Best Cinematography, prisoners were much praised. Conversely, Vanished into the Night has gotten more conflicting opinions; Rotten Tomatoes rate it just 40 percent.
Both movies provide exciting and suspenseful viewing experiences notwithstanding different critical perspectives. While Vanished into the Night offers a gripping narrative of parental desperation, Prisoners explores the terrible darkness of human nature. Both movies provide an engaging examination of the strong feelings surrounding missing children and the lengths parents will go to for their safety, regardless of your taste in a provocative, sophisticated story or a more simple, heart-pounding thriller.
