Movies News Talk
Apart from surpassing its predecessor in terms of box office performance, the much awaited follow-up to the 1996 disaster film Twister has exceeded expectations. Under direction Lee Isaac Chung and starring Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-jones, and Anthony Ramos, the film has a great opening weekend gross and is a strong candidate in the 2024 box office race.
Deadline estimates Twisters would make a three-day opening weekend gross of $74.6 million or more. This amount exceeds its initial estimates, which fell between $40 million and $55 million. Apart from almost doubling its lower-end projections, the movie has exceeded the original Twister, which opened with a $41 million gross.
Twisters's strong opening weekend performance points to a possible high box office success even if its ultimate earnings are yet unknown. Inside Out 2 has already shown itself as a fierce rival within the year's top-grossing films, even if it might not top the highest earning movie of 2024.

Should Twisters keep its present course, it could find a place among the top 5 highest-grossing films of 2024. The fact that important cast member Glen Powell has a history of starring in films that surpass expectations adds even more to its success. Released in 2022 and the 2023 romantic comedy Anyone But You, both Top Gun: Maverick and show Powell's ability to draw viewers by greatly exceeding their initial expectations.
Though specifics of the film's storyline are few, Twisters is set years after the events of the original movie and is reportedly a fast-tracked effort by Steven Spielberg and Mark L. Smith. Frank Marshall is producing this. With Helen Hunt returning as Jo, the movie is supposed to honor the late Bill Paxton, a major player in the original film.
The amazing box office performance of Twisters and the participation of well-known business people point to great success potential for the movie. Seeing how the movie keeps doing in the next weeks and whether it can surpass the successes of Powell's past projects will be fascinating.
