Movies News Talk
You'd never believe it - a movie with Robert De Niro and Kathy Bates ended up with just a 4% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Ouch! That's really bad, even if they are movie stars. Talk about a major critical failure.
We are talking about this 2004 movie - The Bridge of San Luis Rey - which is based on that Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Thornton Wilder. A pretty dramatic tale that tries to figure out the mystery behind a bridge collapse and the people who fell.
We gotta go back to those critics - they just had nothing nice to say about The Bridge of San Luis Rey. They ripped it apart! They were basically like, "This film is dull as dishwater." "The Bridge of San Luis Rey is about a friar trying to understand why those people died. It's filled with intense stuff, but the story just isn’t great and everyone was unimpressed.” You could say that it didn’t even do well with audiences.
I'd probably say - don’t waste your time! It's not so easy to make a movie out of a book, especially one that is as deep as this Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. It has a whole lot of psychological complexity. Maybe they just got the adaptation completely wrong.
Even with amazing actors, if they don’t get a story right - you end up with a real disappointment. It’s a shame because this had some really exciting actors and actresses. Those Movies with great casts can sometimes go completely awry, so remember this!
