Burnham & Book from Discovery is among the best love stories in Star Trek.

Though Star Trek: Discovery boldly made a love story between Captain Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker important, Star Trek's Captains generally struggle with romance more than leading a spaceship or battling enemy aliens. Not since Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine juggled his Starfleet obligation with a long-term relationship Burnham and Book challenge one another, improve each other, and—sometimes—disappoint one another in mature, realistic, and poignant ways.

On Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and Captain Marie Batel (Melanie Scrofano) are striving to make their marriage work.

David Ajala Still Wants to Tell Burnham & Book's Lost Year Story for Star Trek: Discovery

David Ajala of Star Trek: Discovery wants to tell the story of the year Cleveland Booker and Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) spent together in season 3. Following Star Trek: Discovery's time shift to the 32nd century, Michael Burnham really ran across Book at the beginning of Discovery season 3's premiere. Burnham, in 3188, had no idea if the USS Discovery would reach the 32nd century. Michael and Book spent that time traveling together as couriers while developing in love when Discovery arrived a year later, along with Grudge, his pet.

Glenn Bunn of Screen Rant spoke with David Ajala at MCM Comic Con in London regarding the series finale, "Life, Itself," and his tenure as Cleveland Booker on the Paramount+ drama. Ajala responded with his ideas on Michael and Book's love story when asked whether he would be ready to come back and share the "lost year" together:

Since they broke up in Star Trek: Discovery season 4, Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker have battled to redefine what they mean to each other.

Notwithstanding their challenges, their sincere love for one another still exists; hopes are crossed that Michael and Book will return together by the time Star Trek: Discovery season five finishes. Though the beginning of Book and Burnham's love story is yet unknown, perhaps someday Michael and Booker's lost year together in Star Trek: Discovery season 4 will be disclosed.

The Year Missed

Sure, exactly. That would tell a great story, in my view. Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker had such tremendous expansion that year, which I refer to as "the adventures of Burnham and Book featuring Grudge the Queen." Their experiences that year, in my opinion, helped them to become the people we encounter in the next seasons.

Cleveland Book has been through a great range of emotions and events that have led him to this point, right now in Season Five, where he's been given a second chance. I simply feel that these two were meant to be together and that they will be in each other's life forever. True love never runs smooth.

The Superiority of a Love Story

Though Star Trek: Discovery boldly made a love story between Captain Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker important, Star Trek's Captains frequently find romance far more difficult than managing a starship or battling enemy aliens.

On Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and Captain Marie Batel (Melanie Scrofano) are trying to make their marriage work.
