Terrifier 3: The Killer Clown's Back, But Are These new characters Ruining It?
Terrifier 3: Why the New Characters Almost Derailed the Gore-Fest
Terrifier 3 picks up five years after the insane ending of Terrifier 2. Sienna Shaw (Lauren LaVera), our awesome final girl from the last movie, is released from a mental health facility; which, for anyone who had actually seen these films would not be surprising. And guess what? She's off for a Christmas gathering with her extended family! But it also opens up those opportunities to add more to the storytelling opportunities; and for those expecting more gore – well; it remains! Yet this simple event expands the story and the cast of characters enormously.
The Terrifier movies always prioritize the horror elements; however these recent installments demonstrate significant improvements in quality regarding character development – especially those aspects concerning the main character. This attempt made major changes. Yet even these newer installments continue this core tradition by introducing those annoying new additions – relatives of Sienna; plus other additions because of her brother Jonathan’s (David Howard Thornton) new friendships during college! Will those choices pay off?
Sienna's Family: The Unsupportive Crew
The focus remains largely with Sienna’s family and her aunt Jess, uncle Greg and their daughter Gabbie! Sienna is obviously still dealing with severe trauma; the events that transpired after her fights against Art the Clown; which should mean that more attention would be needed for her; not additional hardship or conflicts that increase the levels of intensity she might face after escaping a deadly conflict; this point creates immense problems concerning those new additions, specifically concerning the issues she continues to encounter from these supposed friends and family members.
Aunt Jess is pretty supportive. But Uncle Greg and Gabbie? Not so much. Greg questions Sienna’s mental state early on, showing a distinct lack of understanding towards her traumas; creating significant conflicts for her! And Gabbie? Totally insensitive; invading Sienna's privacy! That shows just how frustrating those supporting cast members really were throughout much of this specific film, for audiences at the least!
Gabbie: The Nosy Cousin Who Shouldn’t Have Existed!
Gabbie's nosiness isn't just irritating— it’s a seriously major problem throughout the movie, not only limited to the previous instance which involves reading Sienna's diary! The plot never tries to diminish that very pervasive nosiness even at those key moments concerning a very important object necessary to fighting off Art! It showcases just how those deeply seated flaws within that very character remain persistent and are not limited to merely casual intrusions upon the privacy of others! This alone makes Gabbie even worse for those watching it; adding immense difficulties in developing sympathy from viewers who see many deeply entrenched and frankly unacceptable behaviours which directly conflict and threaten the ongoing recovery that the main character deserves.
Mia: The True Crime Fan Girl Whose Obsession Gets Bloody
Then comes the annoyingest addition of all. Mia, that friend of Jonathan’s roommate. A true crime podcaster, her fixation is way more unhealthy than what is initially expected from those true crime fanatics and she decides to focus on Sienna and Jonathan’s experiences with Art the Clown. The problematic aspect of the character concerns just how obsessed Mia really is with meeting Art— and what that means concerning how seriously unhealthy that level of interest becomes; leading to that terrible conclusion of having those terrible moments near the shower!
She crosses many, many boundaries to interview Sienna, her intense behavior (which doesn't change her behaviours afterward) leads to those brutal and bloody end which serves to highlight just how this extreme form of obsessiveness had become completely out of hand for that supporting character; yet ultimately, this lack of consequences creates some deep dissatisfaction among the viewers!
Conclusion: Terrifier 3 Almost Chopped Its Own Feet Off
These irritating supporting characters almost ruin what otherwise is that truly brutal Terrifier 3 experience; they easily distract from that gory, over-the-top horror which those previous movies were critically lauded for, instead these changes dilute that same gory intensity to some degree and really dilute what is initially desired! While Uncle Greg’s death was pointless; and Gabbie’s nosiness only impacted some parts later, her interaction should have been far better considered and should be significantly revised before future installments; as some parts involving this characters’ behaviors seem completely unnecessary! Those things weren't necessary! And Mia is completely and utterly frustrating, her obsessiveness becomes quite the unhealthy interest! If Terrifier 3 intended some commentary on trauma it severely failed in delivering it; using extremely irritating and frustrating approaches; especially toward some deeply embedded parts of that narrative which could have been resolved differently; these additional annoying elements actually harmed this new installment quite badly!
