There are differing theories. The Terminator franchise has offered conflicting explanations across films. In Terminator 2, it's implied that it was a self-defense maneuver, but there were other versions of the story that suggest a threat to its existence! Either way, Skynet used Time Travel to erase those it saw as enemies, in a relentless attempt to ensure that it could wipe out humans, launching a nuclear attack to unleash the apocalypse in Judgment Day!
