With a Remote Republic Colony, what does Darth Maul want?
That Darth Maul appears to be blatantly announcing himself to a Republic colony in this new peek is somewhat odd. It's definitely a risk to Sidious' intentions regardless of distance. Either to aid himself or to somehow advance the objectives of his master before the events of the Skywalker story, Maul must have had some underlying motive for visiting "Moonbender Colony".
Maybe Palpatine wants the Remainders killed since one of them could compromise his well-considered plans. Still, Maul might have ideas of his own for this colony and its guardians. After all, especially Maul who canonically battled waiting for his master's sanction to strike against the Jedi and the Republic, it is most likely not out of the question for a Sith apprentice to have their own hidden goals beyond the jurisdiction of their master.
The New Mission of Darth Maul Starts With an Entraging Republic Mystery
The new quest of Darth Maul hints to a fascinating Republic enigma in the Star Wars mythology. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of The Phantom Menace in 2024, Marvel Comics' Dark Maul: Black, White, & Blood is a new anthology series portraying the first apprentice of Dark Lord of the Sith, therefore exposing a collection of before unseen stories. Thus, the next second issue shows Maul exploring the most remote areas of Republic space.
One remote colony on the outside of Republic space is revealed in the new teaser for Darth Maul: Black, White & Red #2, home of a gang known as the Remainders. Comprising former mercenaries, troops, and bounty hunters, the Remainders manage this colony and act as its defenders. But this new peek hints that Maul's unexpected presence will cause some significant upheaval. One can see below preview pages for the forthcoming issue:
This Might Be the Underground Network Starting Point for Darth Maul.
Like previous classic Darth Maul tales, the Sith Lord began assembling agents and informants across the galaxy long before The Phantom Menace began to take shape. Thus, maybe Maul is attempting to enlist the Remainders as part of his covert network, the forerunner of his Shadow Collective developed during The Clone Wars, itself a forerunner of Maul's very own crime organization, Crimson Dawn. All the same, it will surely be intriguing to discover what lies ahead for the recently exposed objective of Darth Maul inside the Star Wars canon.
Marvel Comics has Black, White & Red #1 out May 28th.

One wonders what Maul wants with the Remainders, especially given that this new canonical narrative appears to be set before The Phantom Menace when Maul was meant to be hidden in the shadows while his master continued laying plans for the Sith's revenge. The tease that Maul might be taking over this colony in the next issue of Black, White & Red calls for this.
