Though Practical Magic concentrated on Sally dealing with the curse after her husband's death and looking to break it when she falls in love with Gary (Aidan Quinn), Gillian escaping from her abusive relationship with Jimmy (Goran Visnjic), and the sisters handling Jimmy's angry return from the dead, the Sequel needs Frances and Jet a lot more. Two prequel books, The Rules of Magic, released in 2017, and Magic Lessons, published in 2020, added to the Practical Magic book; a sequel, The Book of Magic, was published in 2021.

The easiest route for Practical Magic 2 is to modify The Book of Magic, however the sequel might follow something other. Should Practical Magic 2 chronicle The Book of Magic, the return of Stockard Channing's Frances and Dianne Wiest's Jet will be crucial. The whole story starts with Jet's awareness of her own death and Frances's helping Kylie (Sally's daughter) discover the truth and her own powers. Although Bullock and Kidman's comeback is also significant, without Channing and Wiest the sequel novel cannot be adapted.
