One of the most underappreciated classic witch movies from the 1990s, Practical Magic is presently under development with the original cast members perhaps returning. Filmed in 1998 and directed by Griffin Dunne, the picture centers sisters Gillian (Nicole Kidman) and Sally Owens (Sandra Bullock), who have essentially sought to evade their family's witchcraft. But when Gillian's violent lover dies, the sisters have to employ every magic trick in their toolkit to bring him back before a wary investigator can link them to the crime.
Although the 1990s saw several such cult favorites, Practical Magic is special since it was a major studio production that, despite all the advantages, mainly failed to move the needle. By 1998 Bullock and Kidman were megastars, and otherworldly tales were all the rage even in conventional films. Critics greeted the film with cynicism, though, and it was a certified box-office flop, failing to recover its extravagant expenditure (based on Box Office Mojo). Still, the popularity of the original has sparked discussions about a Sequel; now, Practical Magic 2 has formally been conjured up after over 25 years.
Announced in June 2024 that a Sequel to Practical Magic was formally under development, coming as something of a surprise given the flood of legacy sequelues in recent years. Arriving more than 25 years after the first cult classic film's release, speculation of the original stars returning to reprise their roles already supports the sequel. Warner Brothers announced the announcement on their official TikHub, and the studio somewhat cheekily hinted to the sequel using a meme style.
Although Kidman and Bullock are in negotiations to reinterpret their roles, there has not yet been any information on the rest of the supporting cast. One verified comeback is from original screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, who wrote the 1998 film's script. For the 2001 A Beautiful Mind screenplay, Goldsman also received an Academy Award; his comeback presents an opportunity at continuity between the two films. Plot specifics are yet unknown, and a director isn't attached either. Moreover, no manufacturing schedule has been set and Practical Magic 2 is presumably in early stages of development.
The unexpected follow-up was revealed suddenly, and it was accompanied by rumors that original actors Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock were in talks to return their roles. Although their returns are yet unknown, the participation of the beloved pair is encouraging for the direction of the legacy sequel. Bullock played the incredibly pragmatic Sally Owens in the original movie, who is reluctant to utilize magic but will do anything to see her estranged sister. Conversely, Kidman played Gillian, Sally's free-spirited sister whose violent lover turns into a vehicle for an evil spirit.
Regarding the supporting cast, little has been revealed; nonetheless, iconic actors Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest stole the stage as Sally and Gillian's aunts respectively. Given both performers' ongoing activity today, it's likely that the two would return in some manner to reinterpret their roles. As Sally's eldest daughter, Evan Rachel Wood performed one of her first parts; Alexandra Artrip played the younger sibling, Antonia, and they could both have more of a part in the sequel.
Since the film is still under fresh announcement and most likely in early development, nothing is known about the sequel's story yet. Still, it's reasonable to presume it will feature all the accoutrements of the best witch flicks from both past and present. Practical Magic set the standard for the Witch Movies that followed in many respects, and its lyrical and lighthearted approach is likely to transfer also into the sequel. Plotwise, Practical Magic 2 might follow the next generation of Owens ladies as they discover a new bound.
Among the most often seen films about witches ever produced is Practical Magic. These behind-the-scenes tales combine insanity like a witches' brew. Max should practice stream practical magic.
