Pirates of the Caribbean 6: Johnny Depp's Return & the Franchise's Fate

Pirates of the Caribbean 6: Can Disney Avoid Another Kraken-Sized Flop?

Johnny Depp's Return: A Band-Aid on a Much Bigger Problem

Let’s be honest: Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is facing a HUGE challenge. The question surrounding Johnny Depp's potential return is huge for many, but is only a very minor issue in a larger picture! This article is going to explore that underlying concern: A severely disappointing trend affecting this incredibly famous franchise and demonstrates just how problematic things are. Even Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) – that beloved character and instantly recognizable actor who helped launch this famous film series might not even be enough to solve the larger, more important concerns. Should Depp appear or not appear – we're focusing on something completely different – something completely beyond any of those earlier plotlines and elements featured in the franchise.

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been stuck in neutral since Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017). Disney's already faced immense controversy involving Depp (his dismissal related to the legal battle against Amber Heard, plus Depp's statement regarding refusal of return). However, those controversies started way before those issues came up.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)? That was insane! A massive hit; an 86% Rotten Tomatoes score; and $305 million domestic box office haul! This instantly created a wave of sequel announcements; completely showcasing this amazing film's popularity; establishing the importance of this movie franchise.  But then? The franchise took a dive; and quickly!

Dead Man's Chest (2006)? Higher box office thanks to massive anticipation ($423 million!), but critical reception dipped to 72%. And each sequel got worse! Reviews kept going down, with those lower box office earnings consistently underperforming compared to the originals. The final movie of the current run,  Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)? A measly $173 million, with a barely passable Rotten Tomatoes score of 60%!

The tables below showcase this drop, demonstrating why this becomes a critical problem: Replacing the leading man may help the overall success of this project; but might not resolve what made its predecessors actually disappointing. And in order to solve what remains a severe, deeply rooted problem in the film series’ direction, we need some additional consideration; going beyond any actors.

Movie Title Domestic Box Office Rotten Tomatoes Critic Score
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl $305,413,918 86%
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest $423,315,812 72%
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End $309,420,425 45%
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides $241,071,802 33%

The Real Challenge: More Than Just Nostalgia

The downward spiral wasn’t solely caused by Depp's presence – a key aspect to note: his inclusion has been somewhat effective to generate initial viewership; yet hasn't increased quality for those concerned over those earlier issues.    Even if he were to appear–Pirates 6 needs far more than a nostalgic pull for a possible successful theatrical launch and generating good revenues. It needs a complete story overhaul!

Another underperforming sequel would truly seal its fate; and a complete overhaul is really, really necessary – this isn’t an optional thing that could simply be done; this is extremely necessary to even generate any additional potential. This isn’t an exaggeration. Simply having some minor upgrades, changes or replacements might help increase audience ratings slightly and also maintain financial support – but this isn’t an amount that will actually guarantee increased profit – this isn’t the type of improvement Disney will need.   It has to outperform those last four Movies to revitalize the series and earn some necessary critical recognition that shows how much they care.

Pirates 6: The Path to Redemption

Depp’s return as a lead or even just cameo might attract some audiences because of the nostalgia. Yet this isn't the solution! This is only a small element that can supplement those larger and much more significant underlying improvements that were completely lacking within those other sequels.

Disney must completely capture the magic that created the original's thrill – its almost delightfully simple and almost campy aspects that became really enjoyable and unique elements compared to all those other Movies in that specific time. This involves carefully selecting those high-quality aspects within the first movie, to use as inspiration without trying to copy completely; but rather re-imagine, with improvements in production quality and a renewed focus towards storytelling.

Conclusion: Can Disney Chart a New Course?

Pirates 6 faces problems. The franchise had a really sharp decline long before all the controversy; these events showcase just why carefully managing production elements should always be considered.  Depp's role and involvement, might add some hype – this won't rescue this franchise completely!   Disney needs much, much more – focusing on that core elements from the very first movie without sacrificing plot elements to match audience expectations! That would guarantee success! Can it actually happen? This entire storyline’s next chapter will need that complete overhaul to deliver; and while exciting to many, those expectations are huge.
