Ever wonder about the life of a super successful musician? Pharrell Williams is more than just an artist! He's an inspiration and his story, told in a completely unique LEGO-style animated documentary, Piece by Piece, gives a fascinating look at his journey.
Piece by Piece: A Unique Biopic
This Morgan Neville directed film, released in 2024, is a fresh take on the artist biopic genre. What makes it so cool? Instead of relying on typical interview-based formats, this uses creative LEGO animation. Bringing Pharrell Williams' life story to the big screen in this playful style makes it super accessible and visually unique.
Accuracy of the Movie
But is it all accurate? Well, the movie largely sticks to the facts of Pharrell Williams' actual life story. Fans get to go through Williams' early life in Virginia Beach and it takes audiences through everything from being surrounded by musicians, being discovered (alongside The Neptunes) by producer Teddy Riley at a high school talent show, right up to the super amazing moments he experiences as a top musician.
Some minor parts got tweaked or downplayed to give audiences an enjoyable narrative but what makes it especially great are all the fun LEGO characters. But some minor details might seem off. What you will learn is that it focuses on telling the essential story.
McDonald's and "I'm Lovin' It"
One of the most fun and surprising parts of Piece by Piece highlights Pharrell Williams' connection to a massive fast food company: McDonald's!
The movie doesn't forget to talk about Pharrell's contribution to creating the iconic "I'm Lovin' It" jingle back in 2003. The film includes Justin Timberlake and Pusha T, all in on this incredible project!
There's some interesting conflict that comes in as Pusha T went on to suggest that he was more integral than many think to the creation of the song but this story isn't fully shown! While there may have been conflicts this documentary does not get involved with that and keeps things really focused on those great achievements!
Family Matters
Piece by Piece is super great. It gives insight to many of Pharrell Williams' achievements, but one minor point of contention from the documentary are the aspects that focused on his immediate and extended family. What makes the documentary really great? It captures his amazing connection to those who supported him, however some parts are cut and give a partial take.
- The focus on Pharrell's parents.
- The significant presence of his grandmother.
- It doesn't have nearly as much presence on Pharrell's other family members such as his brothers Cato and Psolomon.
Another unique part is how little the movie focuses on his children! This may not be entirely a surprise to anyone as Williams keeps these family parts super private! We learn that the movie includes a cameo of his son Rocket and hints that the whole family has great support for Williams' ambitions! However, he had triplets in 2017 but their identities are completely private. It looks like the creators and directors of Piece By Piece understood this need to be respectful and that his private family information should remain undisclosed!
Missing Elements in Piece by Piece
This LEGO film captures many important moments. One of them does skip over his love life! For example, while we know about Williams' long marriage to his wife Helen Lasichanh. There are other notable relationships and the movie skips over that time period completely, such as his romances with singer-songwriter Kelis Rogers, Jade Jagger (daughter of Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones!), Alesha Dixon and supermodel Karolína Kurková, filmmaker Vashtie Kola!
But what may surprise you the most? The movie skips a major heartbreak! It leaves out his relationship and the breakdown between Pharrell and Chad Hugo of The Neptunes! Even though Hugo is featured, what you find out is they don't get along. It turned into a lawsuit about who gets the rights to The Neptunes branding, this whole dynamic of a heartbreak from an early friend and collaborator makes Piece by Piece leave out a truly moving story.
What does that mean? If you’re into great behind the music moments? "Piece By Piece" should provide plenty! This really shows Williams through and through. It might even leave audiences hoping that there is another adaptation that can explore even further moments that help to define him.
P. Diddy: A Notable Absence
Pharrell Williams' career is vast and filled with incredible talent! But who else has left a major mark? P. Diddy, whose absence in this documentary is a bit peculiar given his influence on the music world. Yet, you might consider the reasoning and the fact that Piece by Piece chose to be selective is super appropriate given P. Diddy recent arrests! It shows the writers made decisions to curate the film with only the most notable of moments.
Creative Artistic Choices
Finally, Piece by Piece, this LEGO-style documentary takes a very stylistic way of telling this story. This isn't all based in complete factual accuracy and is not fully grounded in the real world.
Some of these are:
- Underwater scenes in Williams childhood and a powerful echo. A later point of reflection that uses these childhood themes in later years.
- The addition of Carl Sagan’s quotes and clips throughout.
While these details are interesting additions that enrich the overall feel, they should only serve as some exciting highlights to consider, and are meant to further demonstrate Williams' amazing, creative talent. The LEGO aesthetic of this movie adds to this very interesting movie that takes viewers through some major moments!
What this shows for the industry. It is truly a testament to how filmmakers create new techniques, and storytelling in unique ways. What can make the Piece by Piece documentary so well done is that these artistic touches truly only serve to add emotional weight to this otherwise conventional approach. Overall, Piece by Piece looks to be a hit among fans that give insight into Pharrell Williams and shows another approach to take when you are sharing life's adventures with viewers, from LEGOs no less!
