OMG! Patrick Dempsey Might Be Back in Scream 7!
Hold onto your popcorn, horror fans! There's some seriously exciting news swirling around Scream 7. Patrick Dempsey (the one and only McDreamy himself, from Grey's Anatomy), has dropped a major hint about returning to the Scream franchise as Detective Mark Kincaid! He spoke exclusively to PEOPLE; revealing his conversations with producers around returning to reprise the role from Scream 3.
While nothing is totally official yet and Dempsey himself remains understandably cautious in making these proclamations (“Well, they’ve been talking to me about it, and I think they’re still working on the script,” coupled with “And, of course, Neve [Campbell] has signed on, so I think we’ll see.” and “I’m waiting to read the script and to see if it actually goes… In this business, you never know what’s going to happen. But if the opportunity opens itself up and it becomes a reality, then I’ll definitely take it seriously.”). This excitement remains seriously plausible.
For those who need some refreshing, here's what happened back then in Scream 3 (2003): Dempsey played Mark Kincaid, that Los Angeles detective investigating those murders related to Stab 3 (another one of those meta-horror-in-horror plots that is classic Scream!). And this is when he totally developed this cute romance with Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell). Fans then found it confirmed that Kincaid became Sidney’s husband, as teased by Dewey in Scream (2022) and later explicitly confirmed by the directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett in an interview. Then they hinted once again at Kincaid's existence in Scream VI (2023). This showcases just how powerful and interesting his hidden story continues to remain. He hasn’t appeared on screen since Scream 3 though. This upcoming opportunity presents the ideal moment!
Scream 7 was announced in August 2023, directed initially by Christopher Landon; then canceled and replaced with Kevin Williamson; this created its own unique challenges, creating lots of speculation; eventually creating a major comeback announcement from the lead character, Sidney Prescott, (Neve Campbell); later confirming that it will be released in theaters on February 27, 2026. Courteney Cox also has been invited; expressing strong uncertainty about this possibility in an interview.
However, with all these previous complications occurring in that prior production; an immensely pivotal moment that changes all these previously-stated aspects, creating a whole new wave of expectations has developed: That potential comeback from Dempsey, makes all this even bigger and especially interesting.
With Neve Campbell’s official return (following a contract dispute and exit earlier that created unexpected delays), and all these rumors about Dempsey’s potential involvement – what are the upcoming prospects for this upcoming film? Is this potential addition more significant and impactful, considering the absence of both Melissa Barrera (Sam Carpenter) and Jenna Ortega (Tara Carpenter) from the cast in Scream 7? Their exit means a major change which really changes this specific film production, opening a great new pathway. It remains unknown what might result from all this.
With Dempsey’s return – and Neve Campbell, could Scream 7 bring forth Sidney Prescott’s family and could the much anticipated addition into that larger narrative be further expanded to allow those family plot elements a moment in the sun. Fans want answers and Dempsey's confirmed appearance might even offer just that.
Fans remain largely excited. The possible return of Mark Kincaid, along with Sidney, presents a great opportunity for fans: a huge chance at fulfilling some expectations. Will this happen or is it all simply wishful thinking, something merely promised but not actually happening?
Even though Dempsey remains noncommittal, even if highly positive and expecting an extremely strong story which would fully capitalize on those characters, this possibility remains very real! We should stay tuned! A definitive answer for this much-anticipated development would eventually become apparent as Scream 7 approaches in the next year and a half.
