Olivia Munn's Brave Move: Showing Mastectomy Scars in SKIMS Campaign

Actress Olivia Munn is making waves, not just in Hollywood, but in the world of Breast Cancer awareness. She's the latest star in a SKIMS campaign; showcasing her mastectomy scars!   This isn’t some typical fashion campaign, though; it’s a seriously powerful statement of empowerment and self-acceptance following a harrowing battle with breast cancer, which is part of an ongoing effort surrounding Breast Cancer Awareness Month!  This partnership with Kim Kardashian's shapewear brand (alongside Susan G. Komen) is aiming to create more conversation around early screenings – and getting these needed screenings remains exceptionally critical. Munn has also highlighted her importance and effort concerning promoting self-advocacy during diagnoses as well, using that method to greatly improve her chances for early diagnosis.

Those photos—shot by artist Vanessa Beecroft—show Munn modeling SKIMS products (including that amazing nipple illusion bra!).  The campaign itself shows her unique strength; showcasing beauty amid hardship!  She mentions that working through any insecurities felt towards those new body features created a freeing sensation and showed how she finally became truly at ease concerning her own physicality following that deeply personal experience; this effort was critical in motivating and encouraging others in similar circumstances to really work on embracing their bodies post-operation as well! Munn said the entire campaign “is all about confidence, comfort, and feeling your best self.” That she felt amazing during the shoot is further testament to her incredible growth through this extremely challenging journey in life.

‘Proof of how hard I fought’: Why Olivia Munn chose to show her mastectomy scars in new Skims campaign Image

Munn publicly shared her breast cancer battle, documenting her journey on social media (mammograms, ultrasounds, genetic tests) until early this year, all completely negative at this stage, so no issues there, however it led to even further steps which later helped save her life: she was assessed through Tyrer-Cuzick Risk Assessment Calculator, and her score came to an enormous 37.3%– which is three times higher than the normal person! That triggered additional scans and biopsies.

The resulting diagnosis in April 2024Bilateral breast cancer. Munn underwent a double mastectomy and reconstruction along with additional treatment options available; all part of a wider surgical approach which she underwent later.  Those additional surgeries in April included a hysterectomy, as well as several months of egg retrieval– showing immense fortitude to persevere in facing so many intensely challenging circumstances; later welcoming her second child (via surrogate) with her husband John Mulaney, demonstrating just how challenging these types of experiences could become in unexpected ways. A critical moment, and this event was part of the initial planning involved.

Why Showing Her Scars Matters

In an episode from a Susan G. Komen podcast, Munn highlighted that the SKIMS campaign and what her mastectomy scars signify and demonstrates is incredibly profound: "When people think of SKIMS, they think of beauty and sexiness," which contrasts to those prevailing notions surrounding breast cancer, "and with breast cancer, I think that it’s not always the first thing that people think about.” And it’s not until a turning point; after touching up her scars did Munn decide to completely embrace it all; that she is willing to entirely share what that signifies. A monumental decision driven by empowering those people and women impacted similarly, really helping those who faced similar hardships; encouraging the message of healing and accepting new realities following traumatic change.

"I was looking at my Mastectomy scars and I was thinking about the first time I saw them and how shocking it was for me," She states concerning her change of heart concerning those specific aspects of this photoshoot, "And I thought, you know what? I do look at these scars as proof of how hard I fought. And I think I want to not only embrace the scars right now but show other women who have these same scars that there’s nothing to feel bad about."

SKIMS' partnering with Susan G. Komen is wonderful; that initiative demonstrates SKIMS’ history in using its large profile for amazing social initiatives – from donating towards those people negatively impacted by COVID-19 to supporting Ukraine relief efforts, working with the WNBA and NBA, as well as assisting Team USA at the Paris Olympics. A true humanitarian brand. The partnership extended through a significant monetary contribution resulting from donations to Susan G. Komen from a portion of the total bra sales that continue throughout the end of October.
