Did Star Wars Introduce a New Kind of Lightsaber?
There's a new kind of lightsaber that's been hanging out in the Star Wars canon since 2017! No, it's not a double-bladed lightsaber like Darth Maul's. This one's a little different!
What is this New Lightsaber?
We're talking about a lightsaber with a knuckle-bow guard! Pretty interesting! It looks a bit like a real-life sword - with that extra piece that goes around your hand, right? The usual lightsabers don't have that, so it’s pretty rare to see a Jedi with this kind of design.

They weren't so great with all that advanced lightsaber stuff, so that knuckle-bow guard helped their hand to stay put while they used that saber.

- It’s kinda confusing - but there is more. Maybe this is all tied to the light shields some Jedi have, like from that High Republic era. Or the guard might be made of this special metal, like Beskar or Cortosis - materials that block those lightsaber blades! It's all about what material is used for that guard.
- You can’t say for sure without knowing the real story! But it does mean that these types of lightsabers might actually go back much further than anyone thought! Maybe those early Jedi were a little more wild than the Jedi of the Skywalker Saga?
- It could be that those early Jedi had a little more wiggle room - or maybe they didn’t really follow those Jedi values as much. After all, the Jedi had a strict rule that using something like Cortosis against another Jedi is unfair. They believe in those Jedi secrets about honor in lightsaber combat - it’s kind of like a sportsmanship rule!
- They do say, this type of lightsaber could give us a little look back at the history of those early Jedi Order days. The movie "Dawn of the Jedi" is supposed to give us more insight, so hopefully, we'll get a good look at some crazy Jedi lightsaber types. For now, that knuckle-bow guard lightsaber just leaves a ton of questions - but who doesn’t love a Star Wars mystery!
