Movies News Talk
Perfect director Michael Mohan says he agrees on a viewer concern. Originally showing in theatres earlier this year, the horror film stars Sydney Sweeney as Cecilia, a young nun who joins an apparently beautiful Italian convent only to find something evil under surface level. Critics mainly gave perfect ratings for Immaculate; Sweeney's performance is singled out as a highlight.
Now, after Immaculate's digital distribution, Mohan answers a user on X, formerly Twitter, complaining about the way the movie is showing some VOD services. The user in issue describes the film as "comically dark" and notes he "can barely make out what's happening on screen." Look at Mohan's response down below:
"I know, man," states Mohan. "This was not done on purpose either. The compression specs of every platform are beyond our influence. After looking at them all, iTunes is the closest to what we wanted and brighter than the others; it's a true issue that really upsets me.
For a reason, physical media aficionados like to advertise the medium as the greatest approach to enjoy a movie or TV Show at home. Streaming services and VOD systems reduce the audio and visual quality of a film or show depending on compression methods. Although the disparity is not always obvious in scenarios set during broad daylight, darker scenes worsen the problem. The title particularly runs especially vulnerable to the problem since the Immaculate ending and most of the remainder of the movie are somewhat dark.
Probably Game of Thrones is the first notable example of a streaming title being ridiculed on social media for being too gloomy. Online critics of season 8's third episode, "The Long Night," have been somewhat harsh. Although the episode included a dramatic fight sequence, many viewers seemed to find it too dark to grasp or enjoy. Similar criticism for the spinoff series House of the Dragon on Max on an episode in season 1 that mostly takes place at night in 2022 is leveled. Among other recently released works noted for their very grim nature are The Handmaid's Tale and Batman.
Apart from streaming services, the most casual watching arrangements might not reflect what the creators in mind while creating their movie or television show. For example, casual viewers might not have their TVs tuned, the TVs themselves might not be of great quality, or the watching environment might not be dark enough. Though Mohan's most recent post implies that people wishing to view Immaculate at home should do so on iTunes, this is a complicated issue that doesn't seem to be getting any simpler.
