Kingsman: The Traitor King – What We Know (and What We Don't) Know!
Hold onto your hats, spy movie fans! The King's Man 2: The Traitor King is coming (maybe?). This next Kingsman prequel promises an epic clash between the Kingsman agency and the rising Nazi menace, featuring that infamous historical figure; Adolf Hitler, in the story; directly building on the very impressive storyline set previously in The King’s Man.
The first film, inspired by Mark Millar’s graphic novel, The Secret Service (2015), established this amazingly popular franchise! It totally blew up, generating two mainline movies (Kingsman: The Golden Circle in 2017), and then a prequel (The King’s Man in 2021).
The King’s Man followed Orlando Oxford (Ralph Fiennes) fighting Rasputin (Rhys Ifans), and establishes those roots for the later Kingsman organization which sets the stage perfectly for the sequel. There was a mid-credits tease suggesting a future King’s Man sequel. Then things were really quiet. Until Matthew Vaughn confirmed The King’s Man 2: The Traitor King is really happening…
While early news was good; things quickly went south, causing massive uncertainty in the direction for this new and anticipated film! The major upset arrives from 20th Century Studios in October 2024! Their President Steve Asbell essentially shot this project down, explaining there were absolutely “no plans” for continuing the Kingsman franchise anytime soon.
This is huge. Vaughn had mentioned that The King’s Man 2, along with Kingsman: The Blue Blood, was developing; this statement came relatively unexpectedly! Those earlier indications and promises concerning this much-awaited project make this news really a shock! This major shift is concerning.
Why did things go south? It may be about finances. The King’s Man was a box office flop (only making around $125 million; a major financial loss); making things harder considering it might've also cost a similar or greater amount in total cost due to extensive marketing expenditures. Then came Vaughn’s Argylle—another huge disaster. That's enough to make any studio second-guess making any additional large projects, especially of this magnitude!
While nothing is set in stone, most assume the main cast members from The King’s Man are likely to be returning in that promised sequel! The major actors include Ralph Fiennes (as Orlando Oxford), and that incredibly popular villain; Morton, portrayed by Matthew Goode!
That mid-credits scene introduces David Kross as Adolf Hitler; the director already revealed that the film might directly focus on Hitler’s rise to power – so Kross’s presence should be confirmed!
Other cast members expected to return:
These people make up the original cast involved with that first King’s Man project, many of which were very successful and critically lauded, helping cement those earlier parts in this now highly-anticipated project, especially that particular ending from The King’s Man. These actors show potential.
The King’s Man ended with Oxford and allies establishing the Kingsman agency! This perfectly sets things up for The Traitor King, which would supposedly focus on the Kingsman's initial missions and fighting Hitler’s rise! That title already strongly suggests things which would've been entirely missed otherwise.
This plot involving the rise of Hitler and fascism really raises this sequel's stakes and adds plenty of opportunity. Morton’s involvement adds those intriguing plot points.
The King's Man 2 sounds awesome! A high-stakes historical adventure against Nazi Germany using those established Kingsman characters? Count us in! However, those uncertainties highlighted today, makes the project far less likely and much more problematic, yet despite its currently doubtful future status; it presents an interesting possibility – that amazing creative possibilities really do deserve those kind of grand adventures which could explore important aspects in this very serious period; showing this historical and geopolitical conflict using creative liberties with those fantastic fictional spy adventures in ways most people might totally forget, even miss entirely.
