Jurassic World: Where the Thrills Went Extinct (and How Rebirth Can Bring Them Back)

The Jurassic World trilogy? Big on spectacle, short on scares. Sure, there were moments—the Indominus rex jungle ambush, maybe, that second half of Fallen Kingdom going full-on haunted house movie.  But the terror that made Steven Spielberg's original Jurassic Park a classic? Completely gone! Those later releases in the trilogy failed to grasp exactly what created such success. Spielberg understood something really fundamental and extremely important to emphasize which other directors and filmmakers failed to completely duplicate! This leaves much to be desired in later releases of this series!

Jurassic Park was more than just dinosaurs. That suspense and dread; the suspense generated from simple scenes and unexpected deaths completely kept those audience members in constant anticipation. From that T. rex escape; that shocking reveal of a severed arm; those velociraptors stalking in that iconic kitchen. Spielberg perfectly balances fun, thrilling adventure, action with a surprisingly effective blend of intense scares. That was pure genius! Something truly lost by later releases in the franchise.

This brings us to Jurassic World Rebirth— and that explains exactly just why that name itself should get many people excited! It’s planned as a hard reboot– intended to fully ignore many questionable events and designs. The original screenwriter, David Koepp, is back (which alone might be enough to satisfy fans), along with Gareth Edwards (GodzillaRogue One) directing, with Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali onboard! To make this reboot awesome however; it NEEDS that original Jurassic Park horror back. This alone guarantees the initial levels of quality will probably reach new heights compared to past releases. It already feels promising.

Why the Jurassic World Movies Lost Their Bite

The Jurassic World movies grew bigger and bigger – those stakes kept expanding! That became a huge issue, resulting in some very major shortcomings in overall plot, themes and delivery! The sheer scale and spectacle overwhelm the smaller moments– those intimate scares; those unexpected twists that add suspense! Jurassic World Dominion’s 29% Rotten Tomatoes score? That doesn’t really say that.

Those films feel far more like James Bond Movies–that high-stakes, globe-trotting action.   It is really just a constant showcase of large-scale set-pieces: car chases, plane crashes –  without the smaller moments!   This removes any lingering suspense, completely destroying the impact!

Rebirth: Striking that Perfect Balance

It is essential to understand exactly why the Jurassic World Rebirth could either totally flop, or produce amazing success for the entire Jurassic Park movie franchise. The producers clearly realize the problems.   Horror has to be added! It doesn’t have to be purely horror though; it’s a tricky balance! There was that amazing formula used by Spielberg in that initial Jurassic Park movie that never really quite succeeded elsewhere: pure horror coupled with moments of pure, comic-like relief and humor, especially when things become stressful! Rebirth has to follow that perfectly, finding this ideal point.

Edwards gets another chance to shine here.  Godzilla had a chilling effect of scale while having those crazy fun monster battles; similarly Rogue One managed this blend; action combined with those really amazing sequences, that Darth Vader hallway massacre scene especially is the kind of storytelling required from later Jurassic Park releases.

The earlier movies and films in the entire franchise failed miserably!  Jurassic World Rebirth has potential! There are promising things like an experienced screenwriter, director who already had a hand in creating that kind of blend that Spielberg once used! This adds several new aspects like a high-concept storyline– those ideas and plot aspects hint toward a return to more focused Horror thrills along with all those iconic set pieces and larger action sequences! It promises to completely capture some of that earlier success!

This might truly fix what went wrong, recapturing what once made these movies scary.  Fans expect big things!   Will Rebirth deliver? This will remain to be seen.
