Josh Gad , a popular actor known for a wide range of roles from comedic to theatrical performances and voice over work is someone who many are drawn too for his diverse skill sets. While he was publicly known for many different qualities, a memoir about his experience working on Broadway show has recently been released shedding a new view into his persona.
Josh was nominated for a Tony award in 2011 for his performance of Elder Cunningham in “ The Book of Mormon ”. The book however is based on not only his time in the show but a new perspective on challenges that were present from his directior. It is through those situations he was able to also demonstrate growth while working in high pressure conditions.
Despite praise Josh claims the shows director Casey Nicholaw created a very difficult and often unpleasant space. The memoir “In Gad We Trust” speaks more about his experience and he wanted to use his words to bring the events to the surface after many years.
The challenges at the time included issues like leadership, personal interactions, team building. In particular he claims that Nicholaw was more aggressive to him compared to his other costars and felt that he may not have wanted him on the project to begin with. His story shows many issues around communication in those high positions. The book reveals that the creative vision which Nicholaw brought to the show was not met with any real personal skill sets.
The issues continued to play out even after 9 Tony awards were given. Instead of praising the cast for this success The show's director allegedly gave them a negative review of their performance. Then he proceeded to call him out on set often telling him that his decisions were “wrong”.
His decision to voice this information came in response to a public interview about a former show with his past costars. In a public interview Nicholaw stated that Josh would say watch me love me while stating other actors would show more grace. This lead to creating some tensions for his personal relationship with the fellow performer on set.
The former director intentionally or unintentionally pitted Gad and his costar against each other which was a common way he acted during the process of the musical. It wasn’t long before Josh had confronted his costar Andrew Rannells where they realized these issues were from the environment and it changed their interactions. The manipulation between actors showed issues about professional conduct.
While Josh Gad acknowledged and has never denied the talent and vision the director created, this is all without overlooking the very important issues at hand for a personal work dynamic. With all the issues that were present on the show they were still able to have high critical success as well as many Tony Awards despite issues with one of the leaders. He believes there should always be an apology for all that was said and done.
Years later the two actors would go on to work in a revival of the farce "Gutenberg! The Musical!”. It showcases that even with difficult situations these professionals were able to see past all personal strife and to grow together as performers. Their shared experienced would only have allowed a stronger performance in a future endeavors.
Josh has created a new voice on a well know subject of mistreatment while at work and in positions that had a large impact. Josh is one of many actors in that space that shows the complexities of work culture within entertainment . With his public platform the conversations have risen among his fans and media to create a movement toward respectful work dynamics.
