John Mulaney's Hilarious SNL Monologue: Family, Rehab, and Olivia Munn!
John Mulaney, the comedy king, recently hosted Saturday Night Live for the sixth time. And it was absolutely legendary! His opening monologue? Pure gold! He tackled family life, his relationship with his wife, actress Olivia Munn, and his very real, very serious rehab experience in 2020; all topics tackled with grace and remarkable levels of wit that helped audiences fully appreciate that specific segment.
Having previously hosted in 2022, Mulaney's set brought new jokes and also revisit previously used materials; with a mix of older and brand new stories combined; all highlighted by the fantastic punchline deliveries that his career has become incredibly famous for! It brought the audience through the best and the worst moments from the last couple years! He even shared this incredibly funny moment about a conversation he had with his dad during recovery:
"He was trying to think of something wise to say, and at one point he goes, ‘Ah, yeah, I just wish grandpa were here.’ I said, ‘Dad, if grandpa were here, he would be 118 years old, and I highly doubt he would have good advice about handling social media backlash,” Mulaney quipped. “Something tells me that a dairy farmer from East Troy, Wisconsin who was too old to fight in World War 2 [chuckling] — it’s my favorite thing about him, he was too old for the oldest thing that ever happened; they needed every guy and my grandpa showed up and they were like, ‘Uh, we’re good.’"
Mulaney also cracked some seriously self-deprecating jokes about his health and near-future need for a hip replacement, hilariously contrasting it to his parents' relatively good health, despite their frequent tumbles. This entire part was amazing! Even some anecdotes about witnessing his mother fall included hilarious comments that might also unexpectedly resonated amongst his audience and added great relatability that added to the comedy.
“I’m 42, I don’t feel well either,” he began. “My brother called me in April, he goes, ‘Mom fell.’ I fell, it hurt. I also bit it at an outdoor restaurant, a bunch of waiters fanned me with menus, too. I also have a Band-Aid on the top of my hand. Older folks love a Band-Aid on the top of their hand. They love to take out that variety pack of Band-Aids, they shake ’em all up, they find the biggest, squarest, rubberiest Band-Aid, looks like it could patch a tire, they slap it on their hand. They love it to bits. How are they injuring their hands that way? What situations are they finding themselves in? Getting robbed, ‘I got a knife,’ ‘Let me at him, cut through this translucent liver-spotted claw of bird bones you son of a bitch.’"
Mulaney's opening also had those heartfelt but hilarious observations regarding his unique family dynamic, featuring jokes around his multi-cultural family which created surprisingly relevant content to a broader audience; yet the humor always emphasizes a profound appreciation for those differences in their relationships and cultures. With a five-week-old daughter, a two-year-old son, his Chinese and Vietnamese wife, and Filipino maid, and a mother-in-law from somewhere else—Mulaney quipped he mostly spent life looking down at people!
Mulaney's SNL monologue was more than just comedy; it was insightful and surprisingly human! The humor combined with genuine observations— family, health, recovery, and even those challenging Personal relationships – those relatable aspects provided immense value and also demonstrated incredible bravery; all displayed perfectly through masterful timing and exceptional comedic delivery! He successfully uses some difficult yet critical subject matter into surprisingly humorous bits that even the most serious topics could’ve potentially impacted and become deeply personal to every viewer. The audience was engaged entirely; providing plenty of laugh-out-loud moments for all, even in discussing the most painful, serious subjects in one's personal life.
