Jimi Hendrix: Review of Electric Requiem Notes: Superior Than Any Biopic
Once upon a time, Jimi Hendrix enthralled the imaginations of millions of people worldwide by innovating the art of guitar-playing and, by proxy, rock 'n' roll, so it seems only fitting for Ablaze Publishing to publish a graphic novel seeking to capture the late rocker's own imagination via Jimi Hendrix: Electric Requiem. Jimi Hendrix died abruptly in 1970, at the height of his success. Fascinatingly enough, save for Jimi Hendrix: Very few media have attempted to portray his life in biopic style in the years since his death, except for All By My Side featuring Outkast's Andre 3000 in the lead role.
Having said that, it's most intriguing to see his life depicted in Graphic Novel form since the comic book medium as a whole hardly addresses the difficulty to depict someone's life within 200 pages of ink and thinking bubbles. But the outstanding creative team behind this Jimi Hendrix work of fiction exceeded their ambitious target.
The visuals in the graphic novel call to Hendrix's best song lyricism.
Beginning Jimi Hendrix in the middle of his own purgatory, the narrative commences with him reflecting on his life from birth right up until the time of death, all as he awaits his fate in the hereafter. Using the Graphic Novel medium fully, writer Mattia Colombara and illustrator Gianluca Maconi convey Hendrix's story in a way that makes it seem as though this was the greatest approach to portray such an amazing life narrative. Jimi Hendrix, as the singular person he was, captivated millions of people as before mentioned. Thus, it seems only appropriate that the graphic novel lets readers view the world of a future prodigy and directly into the imagination of Hendrix himself.
The pictures of the graphic novel capture Hendrix's best song lyrics. It's difficult not to view pictures like those of a mountain high castle falling into sand under Hendrix's feet and not consider "Castles Made of Sand" or even "Spanish Castle Magic." Jimi Hendrix's songs included such strange images, hence in this graphic novel it feels natural to see them repeated under the cover of a child-like imagination or an older man's psychedelic trip.
Presentation and Execution of Jimi Hendrix: Electric Requiem
Simultaneously, such fanciful details help to depict Hendrix's emotional trip and the extreme pressure he underlines. The instant Jimi Hendrix sets eyes on a guitar is seen as a spiritual revelation. "Something dark started moving inside Jimi's soul," is spoken as if a young, infantile Jimi Hendrix discovers his entire soul re-shaped in an instant, a blessing and a curse altering the path for his life. More in a matter of panels than a movie adaptation could with dialogue or moving images, this one line of narration complemented by striking images states.
Jimi Hendrix: Electric Presentation and Performance Requiem merits great respect, and the narrative deftly introduces the vocalist for fresh listeners while honoring long-time supporters. While those who are already well-versed in that history will be astounded to witness that same history fully realized with creative creativity, novice students eager to learn more about Jimi Hendrix will be more than glad to get a visual history lesson. Similarly, Requiem combines historical narratives to create contemporary allegories and commentary on difficult topics like racism and police violence that seem as pertinent now as they did in 1969. Basically, Requiem is among those few biopics available in any media that doesn't overlook to present a coherent narrative instead of merely skimming highlights of the life of the subject. Jimi Hendrix's music was ambitious, and consequently so is this graphic novel in how it seeks artistic means to contextualize significant events in Jimi's life. Anyone who claims to be a Jimi Hendrix devotee as well as any casual enthusiast curious about his work should definitely read this.
