Pennywise's Return? Why It: Chapter Three Needs to Happen!
Holy crap, It: Chapter Two (2019) just hitNetflix's Top 10! That’s huge! This Stephen King adaptation—part of a hugely popular franchise–really proves that thoseItmovies have this huge, enduring fanbase. Fans loved this one; and even many others from previous attempts! Remember that initial1986book and all those other movies and TV series adaptations? There’s also that newIt: Welcome to Derryprequel hitting screens in2025, further highlighting just how iconic thatItfranchise remains even decades after the source material was originally created!
The first twoItfilms totally killed it at the box office, Itmaking$704 million, andChapter Two,$473 million. They weren’t just blockbusters. These are quality flicks; filled with chilling horror, amazing suspense, top-notch acting (young and older casts), showing why it deserved critical acclaim – yet somehow only reaching some people. And let’s be honest; even if those who didn’t necessarily love those specific movies recognize this fact: those films really delivered some absolutely stunning visuals and were undeniably expertly crafted on many levels.
Many would think a sequel isn't needed – Chapter Twoended withPennywise's defeat! Those characters all grew, that sense of friendship, trauma – completely addressed and concluded and leaving that narrative feeling like a closure. But seriously! Pennywisealways returns; it’s his M.O. He pops up every27 years, making this wholeItsaga inherently cyclical! That's pure fuel for a third movie! This also creates other possibilities, adding another significant detail which increases those levels of anticipation.
So where could they go withIt 3? Lots of places. The previous films follow King’s book perfectly, letting those new movie installments diverge completely. That opens tons of creative options. Focus on thatLosers Clubin27 years? Show those characters facing new problems. Or show that original club back when they were younger, focusing on themes involving generational trauma, creating a more nuanced discussion on family. A third movie could even introduce a totally new set of kids as victims of Pennywise; and showcasing those characters; this new group facing off againstPennywise.
This is another huge aspect behind whyIt 3should happen – it could totally avoid that infamous and somewhat persistent curse onStephen Kingsequels. His films are incredible; several are legendary, classics, among the greatest ever. But his sequels? A bit... underwhelming. Titles likePet Semetary 2,Return to Salem's Lot,andThe Rage: Carrie 2demonstrate the very disappointing history ofStephen Kingsequels.
What goes wrong?Mostly using original storylines that totally go beyond whatKingactually wrote. These movies typically lack a source text to work from!It 3could be an original storyline, a totally new creative concept— which is far, far better and could become a new standard in those kinds of movie releases! It uses the popularity from past iterations to launch something far greater. It has already been proven thatItis totally big enough to pull this off!
Nothing official has been released so far aboutIt 3; but don't give up hope just yet. Those filmmakers currently focus on thatIt: Welcome to Derryprequel show. ButWelcome to Derry’s successmight generate a huge surge of interest. It shows the potential to expand the universe; generating renewed excitement. This also includes usingBill Skarsgård’sreturn asPennywise!It all suggests a bigger plan! SoIt 3is absolutely on the table!
No guarantees forIt 3yet,butChapter Two'sNetflixsuccess really shows the importance and the ongoing importance of the franchise; meaning the potential exists; and might just lead to renewed interest which could totally justify itself by making more content possible. We’re not talking mere nostalgic returns or pointless adaptations. We’re talking about new storylines continuing themes and developing characters.
This shows those moments of compelling storytelling – that intense tension of facing a nightmare over and over— and generating continued interest that demonstrates a strong and dedicated fanbase ready for those anticipated future projects.We really do hope theItfranchise builds on that incredible foundation to give audiences those additional experiences.
