Inside Out 2 did not get envy and ennui right.
Envy was more like "admiration" than it sounded from her name. Anxiety drove the new Emotions (and sent Nostalgia back to a room until it was her time), while Envy (Ayo Edebiri) was her second in command. She therefore worked directly with Anxiety, guiding Riley through hockey camps with a nearly disastrous finish. Envy, however, was more like "admiration" without the resentful and unhappy connotations associated with the feeling of "envy," than what her name says. Envy's respect of well-known high school hockey star Val Ortiz motivated Anxiety to try hard to make her (and her friends) like Riley.
Ennui showed herself more as sarcasm than as disinterest or boredom. Often neglected throughout Inside Out 2 was Ennui, the portrayal of boredness. Unable to be bothered to get up, Ennui spent most of Inside Out 2 reclining on the couch at the headquarters running the console via her phone. Although this suits her name, she exhibited herself more as sarcasm than as boredom or apathy when she took over Riley. Though Ennui didn't interact with Anxiety as intimately as Envy did, the limited times she was seen at work revealed she, like Envy, wasn't classified correctly.
The complexity of Envy & Ennui is what drives Inside Out 2.
Working with Anxiety, Envy and Anxiety created a need to fit in with others; Ennui with Envy and Anxiety produced sarcasm and harshness. Envy and Ennui fit Inside Out 2 even if their names might imply otherwise. Riley went through fresh and more complicated Emotions when she entered adolescence; they typically go hand in hand and describing them would be difficult as they can be many things. Anxiety and envy are among these. Working with Anxiety, Envy and Anxiety created a need to fit in with others; Ennui with Envy and Anxiety produced sarcasm and harshness. Together, envy and ennui would have caused Riley to withdraw; instead, anxiety kept her going.
While also making it all simple for the viewer to follow and grasp, Inside Out 2 had the difficult chore of introducing new and more complicated emotions, making them part of the universe the first movie constructed and having them work with the "old" emotions. Though their names and behavior differed, Envy and Ennui worked flawlessly even though their names were not exactly true.
Inside Out 2: Complexity of Puberty and New Emotions
Inside Out 2 saw Joy and the rest of Riley's emotions encountering new feelings, but two of them were extremely deceiving yet they still worked well. Under Pete Docter's direction, Pixar debuted one of its most intricate but intriguing tales back in 2015. Riley, an 11-year-old girl who battled to fit a new city as she traveled from Minnesota to San Francisco, took the viewers inside her head. Joy (voiced by Amy Poehler) led her feelings; then there were sadness, fear, disgust, and anger.
Finally arriving after a protracted wait, Inside Out 2, helmed by Kelsey Mann in his feature directorial debut, Set two years following the events of the previous film, Inside Out 2 brings audiences back to Riley, now 13-year-old girl, as she cope with the news of her two best friends joining a different high school following hockey camp. Along with new feelings including anxiety, embarrassment, Ennui, and envy, puberty brings modifications to the headquarters of the emotions. After Anxiety drives Joy and the rest from the headquarters, Riley's new emotions take over; two of them aren't what their names suggest.
Inside Out 2: The Power of Complicated Feelings
Inside Out 2 carries on the ideas from the first Inside Out while concentrating on fresh emotions. Like its predecessor, the movie presents a careful and interesting examination of human feelings that emphasizes the subtleties of our inner life.
