Hulu's Carved: Killer Pumpkin Horror Comedy Subverts Tired Tropes

Hulu's Carved: A Horror-Comedy That Surprisingly Subverts Tired Tropes!

Carved: A Killer Pumpkin and Two Awesomely Subverted Tropes

Hulu's Carved (part of their Huluween event) is a horror-comedy that throws a whole bunch of horror clichés at you—but it cleverly avoids two very tired tropes! Based on Justin Harding's 2018 short film, Carved takes us back to Halloween 1993 in Maine’s Cedar Creek Pioneer Village—a "living museum" with Halloween festivities. This includes the key narrative involving a carving competition.

The plot is simple: a giant, freaky pumpkin comes alive, goes on a murderous rampage! A group, led by Kira (Elizabeth Peyton Lee), fights to escape this mayhem. There are those classic horror tropes—but Carved makes things interesting with those very clever subversions and adds twists which might've not necessarily appeared immediately.

Goodbye, "Dumb Blonde" Trope: Maddie's Unexpected Brilliance

Meet Maddie (Sasha Mason)! Initially introduced during a 1700s-themed play in the village, she is shown in that classic “dumb blonde” stereotype; those stereotypical remarks and initial comments about this character clearly emphasized just how cliché these moments actually are—it appears entirely clichéd and unbelievable. She is also quickly re-imagined however! This re-imagining is a necessary aspect which contributes to this entire article; that subverted expectation truly generates immense surprise, changing how the audience itself might already view that kind of stereotype; this allows her reimagining into one of the more amazing and interesting characters! She has surprisingly deep knowledge about plants; providing that very necessary insight concerning how the killer pumpkin could attack! That same intelligence helps reveal her and her family’s relocation here following a prior, unfortunate environmental incident.

Maddie's knowledge about plants also shows just how much critical expertise Maddie had which contributed to their success and survival throughout the events of that specific evening.   Even more critically, it's Maddie who survives alone! The audience assumes she died after an attack.  Nope!  She fights off the pumpkin using herbicide and escapes, becoming yet another important, creative twist that subverts audiences’ initial, stereotypical interpretations!

No Happily Ever After: Kira and Cody's Realistic Breakup

Carved Kira Clint Image

Another tired horror trope? The happy couple that goes through that near-death situation then reconciles afterward, regardless of problems.  Carved totally avoids that! Kira and Cody (Corey Fogelmanis) are in love but hit a serious snag before that main conflict.  Cody reveals getting that role in a play, and it conflicts with Kira’s plans! That hurts Kira, significantly! It's even shown in that storyline, even amidst those insane high-stakes involving pumpkins going on a killing spree! Their entire relationship ends, although that is on good terms; demonstrating respect rather than mere abandonment; a necessary, far more mature ending which contrasts strongly against the kinds of simple outcomes those audiences might expect—making for that much more satisfying and appropriate outcome within this context.

Kira recognizes a breakup could save both, proving a really smart character, unlike those audiences may encounter in so many previous and lesser productions. Those subverted tropes benefit the storytelling by displaying these complex character traits; and those necessary emotional nuances create a more realistic ending.  She proves her surprising skill in dealing with that difficult relationship, making it that much more mature and believable.  The clever handling of the characters is another surprise for fans.

Carved isn’t perfect!  Lots of those standard horror tropes abound!  Yet those unexpected clever moments, like Maddie's intelligence and Kira's decision, help to completely revitalize and subvert expectations within a crowded landscape and make the storyline and characterizations more relatable. That clever execution totally avoids the lazy simplicity of those tropes– adding value for many audiences and it could attract some surprising new people, showcasing clever, unexpected turns; even those simple and slight adjustments greatly enhance a storyline which could've easily fallen flat if not approached in such intelligent and respectful methods.
