Richard Linklater needs more of the kind of film Hit Man while he is working on Merrily We Roll Along.
Like his approach with Boyhood, Linklater is viewing every yearly edition of Merrily We Go Along as a short film. But Hit Man shows that, if he wanted to, he could create a fantastic comedy every couple of years between working on Merrily We Roll Along. For Linklater's better films, Hit Man functions as sort of a return to form.
Though he has tried with animated and rotoscope in the past, Apollo 10 1/2 was quite good but was animated and finally a bit of a different thing. Originally a 1934 drama, Merrily We Roll Along was turned into a well-known stage musical in 1981. It will become the first feature film version of the honored narrative. Except for twelve years of production, Linklater is using the same creative process he used with Boyhood to film Merrily We Roll Along, so spanning twenty years altogether.
Blumhouse is producing Linklater's adaptation of Merrily We Roll Along starring Paul Mescal, Ben Platt, and Beanie Feldstein. The film will be shown in reverse chronological order upon completion, adhering to the original Merrily We Roll Along stage musical concept, as if the creation of the enormous endeavor wasn't already demanding enough. Linklater developed his screenplay on the forthcoming new edition of George Furth's stage drama set for October 2024. The narrative is scheduled to span 1957 until 1976.
